In the US 18 is old enough to be drafted and to vote.

I think your youth is showing! When the draft was in place (which would help if returned IMHO) I could not vote until 21 (and I voted for Goldwater!).

Thanks for all the birthday good wishes!  I kinda treated myself a bit early with a Blitzortung kit, a new Davis VP2+, and a Vantage Vue/Meteobridge for my daughter/son-in-law in Illinois.  Also LED lights to replace the PAR/BR incandescent lights in the house.  Guess it'll be a more restrained Christmas this year
