Looks like we'll be moving the forum to new hosting tonight (7-Apr-2013) starting around 9:30pm (Eastern, 6:30pm Pacific, 01:30 8-Apr-2013 UTC)

The forum will be in maintenance mode starting then (no access while we take a snapshot for the move).

The DNS will be repointed at the end of the move to the new host, but it may take a bit of time for it to propagate through the net.
When you see the forum not in maintenance mode, please logon again and posting can resume.

The conversion to SMF 2.0 will not be done at this time, so the forum should look/feel/have same features as now.  We'll do the SMF 2.0 conversion a bit later.

Best regards,
Ken

Any chance of posting an IP address for anyone who just HAS to get their fix before the DNS catches up?

We'll have an alias address (already active) of http://www.wxforum.org/index.php -- that should allow folks in while the regular DNS propagates.  I'm not sure that a bare IP address would do it since it's on a shared (sparsely) hosting server, and you need that Host: header to send it to the proper website.

Ken

Is the name change correct, Ken (.net to .org)? Just checking.

Thanks.

Yes, wxforum.org will be a new alias to access the forum .. after the DNS change propagates, then wxforum.net will resume as the normal access.

Hosting move completed at 10:35 Eastern time.

Please report any issues you find via PM to me or email to webmaster at saratoga-weather dot org.

We have disabled new member registrations temporarily to allow the DNS to propagate and the mail from the forum to flow properly.

Best regards,
Ken

BTW.. this is the first posting on the new forum location :)

Looking good to me Ken -  =D> \:D/

The only problem I had was ZoneAlarm indicated it was an "unsafe site".

I also noticed that clicking on unread messages since last login was zero when it normally should have been more than that. Probably just a result of going to the new server and not an issue.

Thanks Don,

The ZoneAlarm warning was likely due to the new domain name (wxforum.org) that we're using as an alias while wxforum.net DNS change propagates (likely in less than 24 hrs).

I expect there will be some differences with the temporary wxforum.org URL access v.s. the wxforum.net that should work out when the DNS stabilizes.

Thanks for the info, Ken.

System response is definitely snappier.

I hope it will stay that way since I'm not running any other subsite on this particular hosting :)

Best regards,
Ken

Hi Ken,

As John mentioned, the forum seems to be quicker to load and navigate but then, that may just be my imagination too...

Maybe it's just me, but the .org board looks kinda' nekkid and basic.

Ken,

When I bring up the list of Recent Unread Topics then click on Mark All Messages as Read, I get the following:

An Error Has Occurred!
Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again.

When I try again, the same error occurs.

It ain't fully cooked yet.  Might be a day or two.  It's still switching between the .org and .net sites for me.

Try doing a shift-reload on the page to flush the browser cache.  The DNS seems to have propagated (to OpenDNS users at least) so I'm seeing the new site using wxforum.net

The TTL for the zone is 24 hrs so it may not be fully resolved until later this evening on 8-Apr-2013

Ken,

FWIW, the .net URL is working here in Phoenix (am on it now).

Thanks John..

I too had a few issues switching to wxforum.net from the wxforum.org, but found that logging off, then logging on again seemed to clear the inconsistency up.  Now all is working for me at wxforum.net URL, and I've just tested the mail flow (works) so I'll be enabling the registration again tonight (just to wait out the 24hr TTL on the DNS).

With the new hosting (and no subsites under this hosting account), the dreaded 500-Server Error responses that had been happening should be a thing of the past :)

Best regards,
Ken

I'd noticed the forum seemed to be 1hr ahead too.. just go in your profile, Look and Layout preferences screen and reset the Time Offset: value appropriately.
I think the prior host was running on Central time, and the new host is running on Eastern time as the default.

The goal was to make it as seamless/transparent as feasible.  The wild-card is always DNS propagation time.  Our DNS zone has a time-to-live of 24hrs, so the world-wide visibility of the move should be in place after 10:30pm Eastern tonight (24hrs after the DNS change was made).

The hard part of this was getting phpMyAdmin Export to grab ALL the database without timeout -- that took 6 tries to finally capture all of it.  Then a quick shell script using SED to change some host-specific data within the backup and a 10 minute mysql command to load it up at the new host.  Entire process took just over one hour to accomplish.

My thanks to Chris (capeweather) for his hosting of the forum from it's start in 2006 and his willingness to have the forum ported to a new host (which has a side-benefit of relieving the interference with his primary capeweather.com website).

Best regards,
Ken
