Tempory ISS installation
« on: January 23, 2011, 09:43:12 AM »
With a morning low of -12°F and a good 18-20" of hard crusted snow everywhere I think finding a permanent home for the ISS will have to wait for the Spring. :)

I used a heavy umbrella stand and a piece of electrical conduit for the mast.  It was a bear snow blowing a path to where I was going to place it and I even reconsidered and moved the intended placement due to the difficulty I had breaking through the snow pack.

Its great you got in place, if only to a temporary location. You may want to move the ISS base section higher to keep above drifting snow.

Good job !!!  Just goes to show that nothing will stop us in getting our stations set up. I did something similar so I could get the hang of my station and think about how I wanted to mount mine. When I got mine I wasnt a member of this forum so I was on my own. You know you will take a hit on wind measurement but that can be take care of when you move to its next mounting after the big thaw this spring.

I replaced a WX200 with a bad anemometer so any wind measurement I get will be better than before :)

Come spring I'll either put it up in place of the Radio Shack one on the front of the house or most likely take down that unused antenna on the chimney and mount it on that mast.  If I use the rear mast then I can place the rest of the ISS in a good location in the back of the yard and not need too much extra cable.  If I decide to use the front location I'll buy a remote anemometer for that.

The current location of the ISS in in the red circle on the right of the pic below which was taken shooting to the north.

Putting it up on the antenna mast is a good idea. You will probably need the remote ane kit. One thing.....wow what a nice place you have....are you sure Bob Newhart didnt run it as a B&B at one time ?????

The Vantage Pro 2 is here. Last night we got hammered with snow and ice. So today I had to fight the cold and ice to install it. The VP2 is installed on a telescoping pole which was frozen. The anemometer right now is 15 Ft off the ground. When it gets warmer I will raise it to a height of 26 Ft. There is also a WMR100 and a WS1910U. When it gets warmer I will also get some photos.

Here is a photo I took. Just imagine an extra 11 Ft on top of that. This weekend when it gets warmer I will be able to raise it up when the pole thaws out.

Your pole is starting to look like mine!

Nice pic Greg! Got a feeling it isn't too recent with all that nice greenery around. ;) Question about the 2315 rain gauge, how does it compare with the other gauges I see nearby? I'm wondering, even after tweaking it in, how it does over a period of time against circular gauges. I've been thinking about the rectangular catch area and the various rain angles. You never see any of the NWS or commercial gear square or rectangular. I'm considering taking my 2310 guage apart for the internals and rebuilding it in a round casing. At times it follows my other round gauges closer than other times.

This is from Feb 7th when we had rain:

WMR968

WS-2315

VP2

Keep in mind that the vp2 measures 0.01 in., the ws2315 is 0.02 in., and the 968 is 0.04 in.

Actually they all read pretty close when they're working correctly.

Today the pole melted of the ice. I got to raise it to a height of 25 Ft. The WMR100 is currently sending to Wunderground, CWOP, and PWS Weather. The WS1910U-TWC is for a 3rd opinion. When I get Weather Link the WMR100 will be a backup station if for whatever reason the VP2 goes out.
