Accessing my Netcam from out of system?
« on: May 22, 2015, 11:00:53 AM »
Every time I go away for a vacation it seems like my Stardot Netcam knows and starts acting up.
Anyone know of software that will allow me to access my webcam from "out of system" ?
The Stardot tools only works when I am home and on my local network.

Thanks

You could port forward the IP of the cam then it would be seen outside your network using your external IP and the port that you assigned.

Sounds great, but I'm not to hep on what you just said.

Is there software that can do that?

The only way to view the cam outside your network is to port forward it. Webcam XP will let you view it but you still have to port forward the IP of the camera and the Internal IP of the PC that Webcam XP is running.

If this is "personal use" and it certainly sounds as if it is, and you can control the camera from your home computer, then Teamviewer is a great, free solution.

It is for personal use.
The supplied Stardot Tools allows me to change the camera settings when I am at home and on the home LAN (network).
The Netcam has it's own built in computer that automatically sends the pictures it takes to my webpage host. All I have to do is plug it in to my router and tell it where to send the pictures (along with the password).
It's accessing the Stardot Tools when I am on the road that is the problem.

Greg,

Sorry, I can't tell exactly what you are saying. When you return home, can you go to your computer and fix the camera from your computer or is there something you have to physically do?

Yes
The Stardot tools are on a couple computers on my home network and I just access the camera through the Stardot tools and can change all the parameters from there. No physical contact with the camera is necessary.

The problem is, once I am not at home I can't get to the Stardot tools and I can't access the camera. I do have a copy of Stardot tools on my weather computer (which is on 24/7) so if I could access that computer (from wherever I happen to be) I could access the camera settings.

Putting Stardot Tools on my traveling computer doesn't work because (so far)
I have to be on a computer on my home network.

Greg,

I have been using Teamviewer for several years and frankly, its one of those "too good to be true" things. The price for commercial use is very hefty, but for personal use its free. I have a copy on my weather computer, my out of state sister's computer (with weather programs on it) and my Galaxy S4, so I can operate either computer from the phone or either computer from the other computer.. Would work for you.

Excellent !
I'm downloading a copy now.
Now to get it to work on my Ubuntu and XP computers......

(I see they have a version for Linux)
