"Hurricane" Over Great Lakes/Ohio Valley
« on: September 28, 2011, 04:56:38 PM »

Have you noticed the distinct pinwheel that's been sitting over the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley region the past several days?

It's most noticeable in the IR Sat images and the Visible Sat images. It's associated with a very weak Low pressure system, but take a look at the doughnut shaped jet stream. It's been pretty cool to see. It's been bringing alternating bands of clear and cloudy conditions with spotty but generally light rains.

Been dealing with it the last 5 days!
The visible satellite over the past 3 days does have the hurricane look to it but is finally thinning out.
Locally we've had a tornado yesterday and funnel clouds this afternoon. Showers have been spotty ranging between light to heavy.

It has kept us in the clouds for some time too.  Now we have a "cold air funnel" advisory because of the dang thing.  It just has been spinning and spinning and spinning, but barely moving much.  Our weather was a matter of luck with it.  There were bands of precip aligned north-south, and it trained to the north.  If you was under it you was in the rain for a long time.  If not  you had nice sunny weather. I have had mostly the rain. Reported 1.44 inches to CoCoRaSH in a significant weather report on Monday 26 Sept. The 1.44" fell from Midnight to 10AM on Monday. There was water standing everywhere in the fields. Hopefully it will dry out for harvesting. Can't wait till it moves out.  It was sure pretty to look at on satellite though as you said...I especially liked the colored water vapor!

I saw a good graphic of it yesterday.  Monday night there was some pretty good rain just west of me.  Forecast was for an inch of rain that night.  Woke up and it was dry as a bone.  Weather "always" goes west to east around here.  But that band of rain was going due north then heading west as it wrapped around the low.  Cool how stationary it was.

It was the NOAA IOD (image of the day) yesterday I think. This is the best I could find to show:

I forgot that I had save an image of the storm from the visible satellite.  This is from the 26th but it looked much better 4 days or so before.

That's a good one. Thanks for posting it!

We have another very distinctive cyclone over us right now (different from the one that stalled over us earlier in the week). This one is associated with a stronger Low than the one earlier in the week.

This is from the 26th but it looked much better 4 days or so before.

I would call that a "textbook" Low.

Here's a good compilation animation of our "hurricane" for the 23-27th

Pop it up to full screen, as it is a high resolution image.

I would call that a "textbook" Low.

What was so interesting, though, is that throughout those 4 days or so earlier in the week the isobars were never tight at all (weak gradient and relatively light winds) and generally didn't even form closed loops. During that time my pressure slowly varied from a low of 29.64 on Sept. 26 to highs of 30.00 inHg on the 24th and 25th. All very strange for such a well defined cyclone. The other oddity was the small, detached doughnut-shaped jet stream sitting roughly over Michigan.

In contrast, the current system that is presently over Michigan has tighter isobars (stronger gradient), lower pressures, and higher winds presently over eastern WI and Lake Michigan.

There were several water-spouts in Chicago a week ago. I was to far west to see any but I saw the pictures of NWS site. I never seen those before.
