"Ask" this years first winter storm here
« on: January 25, 2010, 02:04:29 AM »
Today the national mets. here are sending out an extreme storm warning in North Norway, the storm that now are just south of Greenland, going over Island towards here are called Ask, and it will be wind up to 30m/s and much rain.

Along the coast they are asked to secure all loose items, and stay inside tomorrow. It can be really heavy sometimes when loose items are flying around......

Well, i think we get to feel it here in Fauske to, it's not so far to the coast. Norway is very "thin" here were i live, so you can almost say it's in the coast. The fjord will also bring the weather in here  ;)

Hopefully i can get some nice storm pics.

Post us any pics that you may end up getting in the next few days.  They are calling for another storm here, by the coming weekend.

Well. Ask has gone now, but it didn't hit us as hard as expected. The mets had a "storm" on the telephone the day after  ;) Here it wasn't any harder than a normal winterstorm as we are used to (OK, it did get around 20m/s in windgust), but in Lofoten, further out in the ocean, some roofs "left" their houses and some loose items was flying away.
When an alert like that is coming here it shall be danger off life's and/or other values, and it is 4 year since last time a alert like that was given.

Today, it's a worse day.. it blows right under 20m/s right now and it's -16C outside, that's a windchill like -29C  That's freezing cold!!! I almost froze to ice when i was outside to get today's newspaper an our ago, and it shall continue like this today  :-|

Happy to hear "Ask" spared you. Were there any photo opportunities during the storm? A shot of icicles hanging from your nose while retrieving the newspaper perhaps? ;)

Our winters hear in the UK are mild compared with Scandinavia, Canada and the US.

Glad you are OK Tor  =D>

Incidentally, is your name Tor or Reg? I'm sure I saw a reference somewhere to you being called Reg.

Alan, as far as i know my name is Tor and i haven't used Reg as a name or nick, so it must be someone else.

Today has been a cold day here with a lot wind brrrr, had to have a plumber here to open the hot water pipeline to the second floor....it was frozen    So if the wind continuous, i will let the hotwater drip a bit this night  ;)

Tor, your pipes could still freeze, even if you allow them to drip. It would be better if you could raise the temperature of the area/room which contains the pipes. It is difficult at times to ensure that all exposed pipes are insulated, but raising the temperature will help. Perhaps using a mobile electrical heater with a frost setting.

Good luck.

Alan.
