VP2 Console firmware update
« on: August 16, 2018, 09:01:00 PM »
Greetings all.
I wish to update the firmware on my VP2 console from 3.63 to 3.80.
I have a Davis 6163 Wireless Vantage Pro2 Plus and matching wireless console, product # 6312.
I am using an Ambient Weather WeatherBridge Pro Internet Appliance for network connectivity.
I purchased this equipment new in June 2017.
So far, I have been unable to find information that explains what I will need to accomplish this.
I would appreciate any information that the members of this forum may offer.
If you have any questions, please ask.
Thank you very much for your time.
Doug

Thank you very much
However, I have already attempted to use the direct from PC update via IP and USB.  It tells me the device can not be found.
Is there some other piece of hardware needed?

Sounds like a comm problem as my USB used to give me fits, but that was long ago. Others will know more.

Thank you.
In my attempt to update the firmware using the 3.80 update file, I have clicked on the Help button several times.  Unfortunately, only a blank window appeared.  However, shortly after reading your previous post, I tried again to see if anything had changed.  I inadvertently ran the update file for version 3.15.  There I clicked on the Help button.  Thinking I was using the latest file, I was very surprised to see data appear in the window.  This was very helpful in explaining that I needed the WeatherLink data logger to perform the update.  I am assuming this could apply to the latest version as well.
Could you confirm if I do indeed need the data logger to update the firmware on the console?

Yes. I know of no other way without this.

Thank you very much for your help!
I guess it is either that logger or no updates.
Oh well.
Take care and keep safe.

I really have no idea. But if it were me I would try connecting via  a USB 2.0 hub. Also maybe try with the AC power connected to the console.

Thank you.
There is no USB connection on the console, and no expansion port adapter.
It would seem I will have to either purchase the WeatherLink data logger, or not update the console.
Take care.

First you said you tried to connect via IP and USB. Then you say that there is no USB connection on the console. So which is it? Well since you asked what other hardware you need...well you need a USB data logger.

Thank you.
Simply a misunderstanding.  I selected both options from the software interface in a vain attempt to make it connect to the console.
At the time I had no guidance as to what was needed or how to accomplish the update.
I do now.
Take care.

Okay ...no problem....So based on your original question, and seeing what your setup is, I think maybe you could benefit from understanding how everything you own communicates with each other.

ISS ----> Console via RF (dead end without data logger)
ISS ----> WeatherBridge Pro via RF ---> Network ----> Internet

Only the WeatherBridge is connected to the Network (with your setup).
Your computer can not see or talk to your console because it stands alone (no data logger adapter installed). Your console does not talk to the WeatherBridge Pro (it isn't supposed to regardless for your setup...although it could via a USB data logger...but that would be redundant and it still would't help you upgrade the console if the USB data logger were connected to the WeatherBridge Pro).

But if you had a data logger (IP version connected to the network or USB version connected to your PC not connected to the WeatherBridge Pro) then you could upgrade the firmware.

The information on your console is just the information coming directly from the ISS and the consoles internal sensors for indoor temp, indoor humidity, and pressure.
The WeatherBridge Pro has its own internal seonsors for indoor temp, indoor humidity, and pressure.
You can disconnect and get rid of your console and you would still be able to report to the Internet services you have configured in the WeatherBridge.
So without a data logger your console cannot be seen by a computer nor for its data nor to do firmware updates. (unless the console can be upgraded via some other way that I'm not aware of like using a JTAG - don't ask ...it is too advanced to even ponder for most people)

Thank you very much for the excellent explanation.
I was aware of most of this except for where the data logger comes in.
I had purchased the WeatherBridge instead of the WeatherLink data logger for network connectivity with no clue as to any future need for the logger to update the firmware.
It would have been nice if Davis had equipped the consoles with a more direct method of updating firmware.
Looks like the IP version due to distance.
I am not that deeply into circuitry to possess a JTAG.
More of a black box technician.
Oh well, live and learn.
Thanks again to all for your help.
Take care and keep safe.
