Ultrasonic Anemometer for Davis VP2 on eBay
« on: July 13, 2014, 02:44:51 PM »
There is a listing on eBay for an ultrasonic anemometer that claims to directly interface with Davis.
The price is too rich for my blood, but it seems interesting...

Anyone know anything about it? This is the first I have seen it.

Why would anyone bother buying at that price point when it costs 3x the entire VP2 system?  Wow.

You might as well just buy an entire Vaisala system if you're going to pony down for that!

Would be a bit of a disappointment if you got it and found it wasn't compatible with the VP2. ;)  But seriously, if you wanted a high end anemometer for your Davis system, I would go with a RM Young and the Davis Universal Anemometer Interface.

This is just the Darrera one though isn't it? See the link from the 'Empowered by Davis' part of the Davis weather website. It's been around for a while.

Sorry, but I don't usually have time to help with individual issues by email unless you are a Prodata customer. Please post your issue in the relevant forum section here & I will comment there if I have anything useful to add.

At least the spider webs wouldn't keep it from turning.

Looking at the specs...

Wind Dir Accuracy
Davis: ±3°
Darrera: ±2°

Wind Speed Accuracy
Davis: Greater of ±2mph or ±5%
Darrera: ±2%

So for a 50mph wind, the Davis should theoretically record somewhere between 47.5-52.5mph and the Darrera 49-51mph. It's difficult to justify the ~$1900 difference based on that. Plus the Davis actually has a higher speed range...not that I'd actually ever need anything greater than 60 m/s where I live.

If you'll be in areas where it doesn't freeze/snow/ice you should be pretty OK.

I have had wet snow so heavy in no-wind conditions followed by a temperature plunge that froze up all my anemometers, including a non-alpine RM Young.

Most were too far up to go try to de-ice by hand and had to wait a few days for sun and slightly warmer temps.

These gizmos don't like snow or ice.

I had an RM Young that was nice, but an errant piece of ice falling off my tower after a spring ice storm took off one of the little transmitter / receivers.  Attempts at reattaching were successful due to the angle of the crack, but because of the toleances, even the wee bit of offset and despite trying to measure the triangle, it was never happy again.  I called RM Young and talked with the nicest guy, very understanding that it was a hobby not a business nor were there deep pockets, but the best he could do was a $500 - 600 repair charge....

Very interesting.

How will it cope with short periods of sunlight at high (low) latitudes? I'll definitely consider this replacement sensor to be installed next spring.

Great, I'll read that one! I've PM'ed you my email address.

I've got a network of stations located between 59 and 69 deg. north. At 65 deg and further north daylight is scarce during the winter season. The wireless VP2s work flawlessly, though.
