WUHU and VWS Lost Communication (SOLVED)
« on: March 01, 2013, 03:33:17 AM »
I don't know if it has anything to do with the new Davis firmware upgrade but for some reason now I'm having an issue with WUHU and VWS not communicating anymore through VVP.

They both work OK when I set communication directly to the console's serial COM port but fails to download and run when using a VVP COM port.

Cumulus, WeatherLink, VPLive, work just fine.

possibly due to the use of the LOOP2 command?
(which VVP does not handle)

I don't know if this is what you are referring to, I unticked "allow faster looping" in VVP and that didn't make any difference.

no..

VWS will be detecting the newer firmware and then enabling LOOP2 instead of LOOP
but VVP does not support LOOP2

Thanks, Brian.
I guess I'm out of luck running either of these through VVP, anymore.

I should have left well enough alone.

Yup, I'm having the same problem....after the Davis FW update, VWS is the only thing that won't run through VVP, no matter how i set up coms ](*,)

IP mode with a non IP data logger is just serial to IP back to serial
so will not help (with the LOOP2 command problem)

I emailed Davis support and asked if they would send me a copy of the 1.9 firmware installer so I can try a rollback to see if it will alleviate the current comm issue.

I also sent Steve at SoftWx an email describing my issue and asking if there is a possible work-around.

Jack    I think it's a VWS problem, not VVP. I've been in contact with ED @ Ambient...I'll let you know if he comes up with a solution. Would you do the same if Steve has one?    Thanks  Jack

OK,!!! I'm back in business!

I re-flashed the console with 1.90 firmware that Davis support emailed me and everything is back to normal!

WUHU  and VWS are both communicating correctly again through VVP!

So it seems there definitely is something within 3.12 preventing these particular programs from working while using VVP ports.

Did I say...!!! =D>

I dont think that statement is fair to be honest
instead its a problem with WUHU and VWS in detecting a newer firmware and then changing how they communicate with the console (e.g using the LOOP2 via the davisvp dll )

Agreed.

The issue seems to be something in the two programs themselves at fault rather than in the firmware itself. Three of five worked perfectly, two did not.

maybe the problem is the verson of the vantagepro.dll used ? (i.e out of date for the new firmware)

The DLL is deciding on it's own what to do and there is no control over that from what I have seen. The speculation that a newer version of the firmware is detected by the DLL and features are used that are not implemented in programs like Virtual VP.

Basically Virtual VP is a traffic control cop and he sits between your weather software and the actual console. When the software makes a request it is then carried out by Virtual VP. If there are commands like LOOP2 that virtual VP does not understand then it will be hopeless. I believe that Steve mentioned this a long time ago either here or on his web page. He probably has not had time to invest in it and I am not sure whether or not Davis has been forthcoming with the low-level details.

I would suggest to Davis that it is in their own interest to work with Steve as he brings a unique product to the market place that a lot of people really enjoy. I will fire off some emails myself on the behalf of Steve if he is willing to spend more time on it.

Thanks.

Full details of LOOP2 are in the latest Serial Tech Ref, so I suspect that the only limitation is whether Steve has any spare time whatsoever that he's happy to spend on further coding and away from his full-time work.

one solution might be to use an old vantagepro.dll file (from the days prior to LOOP2)
