I was wondering about the effect of ice coverage on lake-effect snow and came across this interesting article from NWS here in Northern Michigan.

It pretty much confirmed my suspicions that ice coverage does minimize lake-effect snow.
Also found an interesting feature on NWS showing ice coverage: http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/glcfs.php?hr=00&ext=ice&type=N&lake=l (http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/glcfs.php?hr=00&ext=ice&type=N&lake=l), the animated one is pretty cool. 8-)
