Ambient Weather WS-1201-IP Observer
« on: June 21, 2018, 02:42:51 PM »
I ordered the WS-1201-IP Observer direct from Ambient Weather. They had the best price compared to eBay and Amazon. Also ordered from them the EZ-NPP mast. I am in the process of putting the mast together then I'll power up the station. I did see that this kit got 4.5 stars out of 5 on Amazon. Is that accurate?

When I search for WS-1201 on the forum I get no results. I assume WS-1201-IP is the model number of the complete kit and the sensor array is a unit common to several different kits?

I am strongly considering this option to replace my aging VUE.  To this day, Davis has not integrated data features and the cost of their hardware/software is more than a brand spanking new Ambient with all the bells and whistles.

All of these use the same sensor array:
WS-1201 Is the same as the WS-1201-IP but does not connect to the Internet and has no ObserverIP device.
WS-1201-IP I guess you could call a complete kit, with display and Internet connectivity via ObserverIP.
WS-1401-IP Same as WS-1201-IP but does not include the display, uses ObserverIP to connect to Internet.
WS-1002-WIFI is like a WS-1201 but the display does connect to the Internet and there is no need for an ObserverIP.

Out of the bunch of those I'd say the WS-1201-IP is the best most complete and the higher price reflects that.

So if you take a WS-1201-IP and you remove the display you end up with a WS-1401-IP. If you take a WS-1201-IP and you remove the ObserverIP you end up with a WS-1201. But the WS-1001-WIFI uses a different display that functions as both a display and as an ObserverIP. The ObserverIP requires an Ethernet connection. To some that may be a problem. So the WS-1002-WIFI creates a complete wireless solution. But having the ObserverIP makes for a more expandable system if you want to add a MeteoBridge (WeatherBridge). You can convert a WS-1401-IP or a WS-1201 into a WS-1201-IP by adding the missing piece (display or ObserverIP device). You can also add the ObserverIP to the WS-1001-WIFI.

If you don't see much mention on the forums about the WS-1201-IP it is because it replaced the WS-1200-IP. The WS-1201-IP is an upgraded version that uses a super capacitor instead of rechargeable batteries. So they are basically the same thing. Also recently is the newer WS-2902A is a more popular choice. Both probably use the same sensors just a different array shell design. Some people have preference for the WS-1201-IP console because it is able to be viewed at more angles but others may prefer the colors of the WS-2902A display. Personal choice as to which is better. The WS-2902A can also be expanded to use the ObserverIP, and hence then also a Meteobridge (WeatherBridge).

The WS-1201 with the observerIP is up and running. The tech support people at Ambient Weather were great in helping me thru a couple of tech issues. And I'm live on the weather underground:

How does one differential between the 1201 and the 1200 physically?  I'm asking because according to Ambient they are both marked WH24 or WH24B.  I have two 24B units that use rechargeable batteries, but I'm curious if they actually changed anything internally.  The 1201 manual says to install regular batteries, so the circuit inside had to have changed.

As far as I know you can't. I have had the WS-1000, WS-1001 and  WS-1002 , which are all the same outdoor array as you have.
I've had all 3 as the initial, and subsequent, needed replacement.

I figured there had to be some FCCID change but guess not.  I'm thinking of refurbishing them and deploying them at various relatives since the GW1000 is so cheap.  Ambient sells the replacement humidity sensor for $10 which is what normally goes out of whack.

The WH24 sensor array did go through a generational change a few years ago. You can't physically tell them apart though I don't believe. I think you have to open them up. Although it seems to reason that they each probably have a different FCC identification. The difference is that the early version used analog temperature and humidity sensors. Then the revised version came with digital SHT chip sensors. Depending on when you bought your station would determine which type of WH24 you got. Obviously the newer SHT sensor type is much better.

Best I can say is that if you open up your WH24, that you could easily tell if you have the analog sensor or the digital SHT chip sensor. These parts are not interchangeable between each type of WH24. But a GW1000 would not know the difference as the received signal would be the same. There is a thread on this forum where you can see pictures of the inside of both WH24 versions. It is a thread that discusses replacing the failed temperature and humidity sensors. I searched but couldn't find the thread. Closest I got with this thread discussing the analog and digital versions of the theses replacement parts.

Thanks for the link.  There is a link in that thread that shows the differences between the analog and digital sensors and the supercap!
Although, I keep seeing it stated the 1200 console (aka 1002) doesn't work with the new sensor arrays (like those in the WS-2000 Y wing) but it certainly does.  At least mine does .. and yes some of the calculations are off but I think there is a page at Ambient that tells you how to adjust that both ways... new console old gear, old console new gear.  I stumbled over it by accident.  I will try to track it down again.
