Out with Acurite and In with Ambient Weather
« on: September 15, 2017, 08:12:22 AM »
My Acurite died so I got My Ambient Weather up yesterday. The Acurite was in my back yard in the middle of trees because it wouldn't transmit from anywhere else because it was to far. The AW seems to be much stronger signal so I mounted it on 2 sections of electrical conduit pipe. Its about 21 ft right now. Should I change this? Should I worry about lightning strikes using metal? If I go higher I'll either need guy wires or change to maybe a fiberglass mast that is in sections but bigger in diameter?  At this location the wind readings are much better. What do you guys think?

Is this rigid conduit or thin-wall? My neighbor has an antenna on a long section of black pipe and it seems to survive the winds, although it sways a bit. If it is thin-wall conduit, I would say that this isn't adequate.

As far as lightning is concerned, it should probably have a grounding wire and ground rod.

Thank-You for the tips, its the thin wall but seems pretty sturdy. I separated the wall mounts quite a bit so I may look at something like this: https://www.mgs4u.com/fiberglass-push-up-mast.htm
Thanks,

There's plenty of tutorials on the web for how ham radio operators ground their towers.  Remember, avoid sharp bends in the ground wire between the mast and rod.....

Thanks, I hope it's my garage cause I drilled holes in it to mount Station.
