Repair or replace?
« on: July 01, 2018, 06:17:10 AM »
Hi,

I have had the Davis VP2 for the last 7 years. Its withstood some terrible weather here in Ireland over that time.
Unfortunately Snow storm Emma killed the anemometer a few months back. It still measures wind but will show occasional erratic gusts of 190kph etc 😭
The Dew point and humidity readings have been incorrect for quite a while (both dew point and humidity might be same sensor?)

Although expensive I've got good value from my Davis. Is it worth trying to repair this system or would I be better off just getting an entire new system?
The cost of replacement parts adds up quite quickly, I'd like to save money by perhaps using the original console and weather link perhaps?

Any advice appreciated.

Regards

Gareth

One good option is to replace just the ISS.

Sorry, but I don't usually have time to help with individual issues by email unless you are a Prodata customer. Please post your issue in the relevant forum section here & I will comment there if I have anything useful to add.

🤔 400 GBP for the latest sensors without the console.

I'd like the wireless Envoy also so I could mount the console properly.

In the States Davis offers a refurbishment which is very well worth it.
You may want to check if that is an option over there.
I bought mine in 09 and in 16 I sent it in for a refurb. Best $150 I ever spent.

AFAIK, the refurb thing is US only.  I tried to do this in Canada.  Nope!  Sending it to the US would cost close to $300 USD (at today's rates, that is over $400 CAD) with postage etc.  Better to buy new stuff from Scaled Instruments.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
It's a toss up between getting the VP2 ISS or getting a Vue ISS and using my existing VP2 console.

Nearly double the price for the VP2 though!
The Vue seems like good value but I'm worried about the rain bucket getting blocked with dirt and also not impressed that your can't replace individual components like you can on the VP2.
€250 for the Vue ISS and €450 for the VP2 version

If you're used to the VP2 you probably won't be impressed with the Vue.  Just my two cents.

The VP2 has the upgraded temp/humidity sensor and the anny can be remotely separated from the ISS. The Vue has neither capability.

The temp/humidity sensor is the same unit.

Currently, a new temp/humidity sensor and an anemometer from Scaled Instruments would cost around $150US plus the shipping expense.  I have no idea what it would cost across the Atlantic, though.

If you decide to do a d-i-y refurb you might want to consider ordering a new super-cap and maybe a new ISS solar cover if yours has dulled greatly.

Just some thoughts. :)

I've went ahead and ordered a new Vue ISS. It's approx half the price of the VP2 ISS.
Granted it's not a VP2 but I'm saving some money this way.
Station will be moving location too and the all in one Vue will suit the new location better.

Anyone know if the old ISS is of any value on the likes of ebay for parts?

Congratulations on the decision.  Gee, I was a bit late on my reply.

I would think that without the console, having a faulty temp/humidity sensor and anemometer, and other components aging, that it wouldn't be worth a whole lot.  But, better than scrapping it.  I'd just be honest about its condition and get what you can for it.
