My barometer collection
« on: September 14, 2014, 04:24:07 PM »
First, let me appologize because I think my new phone made these pictures too big.  Sorry about that.  I don't have my new electronic weather station yet, but I have a number of analog weather instruments.  I thought I would share my collection of barometers.

First is a Jason branded 28" in walnut with thermometer and hygrometer.

Second is a Swift Instruments 3-piece unit in fruitwood with thermometer and hygrometer.

Third, we have a 21" Airguide in walnut with therm and hygro

Next we have a Chelsea Clock Co. brass barometer.

Last, but not least is my pride and joy, a Gunnar Christiansen barometer from the 1800's with a thermometer that reports in Celsius and Reaumer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%A9aumur_scale

Cool. Love antique multi-instruments. If you have any for sale let me know. :)
I live in an apartment and for the moment am not a home weather watcher.

I am a storm chaser.

Nice. I'm always fascinated by older / old analog instruments, especially clocks.

That collection is awesome! I've always had a thing for barometers. I've got a barometer from the early 1900s at home that I've had for a few years and really enjoy, and it works spot on! I also used tp have one of those old Galileo glass thermometers, but it sadly didn't survive the last move. Have you tested to see how well your barometers work? The walnut one on top is definintely my favorite! Thanks for sharing!

When I get some time I'll add a few pictures of some of my favorite clocks.  You're right, there is a fascination with them that I can't explain.

Thanks for the kind words.  My Chelsea barometer is pretty much always perfect and my "reference standard".  The Jason matches up with it very well, as do the others, even the antique!

Just because it's old doesn't mean it's not accurate! I think they beat modern barometers in my opinion. Plus, they LOOK WAY more appealing!  8-)

Just found this thread. Hopefully I will be able to post some pics from my phone. But, yes, I to have a bit of this strange fascination with the old analog or antique instruments. Here is a look at few of the favs.

Hmmm. Not sure if posting from my phone works after all. I figured my fellow weather geeks would get a kick out of my barometer bunch. Did the pics from my previous post appear to anyone? Sometimes I see them and sometimes not.

I missed your reply before.  Very nice collection.  I love analog.  That's why I can't part with either of my audio turntables  or my vinyl.

Thanks guys. It seems that I don't see my pics unless I have logged into the forum. Interesting and strange.
Yea, it's fun to resurrect an instrument from the 1930's and bring it back to like new condition. The bezels and such generally are made from real brass which can be buffed to a shine. If it was made in the 60's or later, you start to see plated stuff which is tougher to restore without damaging. And the old wood and finishes are really resilient.  Once you spend some elbow grease and Murphy's Oil Soap, then a bit of Pledge, they tend to glow like the day they were made. Fun stuff.
