While looking at weather related stuff on ebay, I saw a display and electronics box for AWS that I'd seen in the remote past.
It looks a lot like a Texas Weather Intruments display, with solar and a few other LED sections added, housed in a light oak colored frame, and in this case (different from other display-only ebay listings I've seen some years ago) had an electronics box associated with it. No sensor package seemed to have survived this one's life.
I was curious as to the history of this device. Was it a private company? I recall that it may have been part of a project to have installed and monitored by students in schools. With the modem connector it seems to be pre-internet, and designed to talk back to some central location to report, but how often and was that information available for viewing by other participants?
How widespread was it at the culmination? How many years did the project last? Did the organizers go under and these stations suddenly become boat anchors? Was it a Texas Weather hardware device, and what did the external sensors look like and were they very accurate?
I'm curious as to whether any of the members of this forum were participants and have any comments from real experience?

Ah the ID-4001. I never had one, but a friend had one and has run continuously from when he built it except for a few interruptions during really bad thunderstorms.
I had built a 5001 and enjoyed it a lot. Wish the innards were a bit more robust and the blue screen would have lasted.
No, the thing I'm looking at is a system that apparently schools were given or could buy and was a system linked with dial up data submissions back in the 90s. There is a WikiPedia discussion, and gives some info, but I was looking for someone who had one or who put one in their school and comments on how the thing was for functionality.
Does your 4001 have the original chip set or did you update to the replacement CPU that tweaking things a little bit?

Oh that is not mine. I was just trying to find and identify what you are talking about based on your description (old, LEDs and wood). I found those pictures on the Internet. Someone on this board may be familiar with what you are talking about but without a picture they may not remember. Having a picture can trigger old memories of seemingly forgotten things.
Can you post pictures of what you found on eBay, or from anywhere else.
