My uncle, who I never met (was born years later), was KIA aboard his DD tomorrow with 11 shipmates, 75 years ago. Many other kin and family friends served in all theaters too.
His destroyer had been commissioned just seven months before, and had already seen extensive action against the IJN, including sinking a large Japanese submarine unaided.
At the very moment the ship was hit by a Japanese 6" shore battery while on a SAR mission inshore, a photograph was taken of it from an American bomber flying near the island our US naval forces were attacking (pic here): http://www.navsource.org/archives/05/pix1/0554431.jpg

His DD was a part of the task forces involved in the mid-WWII 'Operation Galvanic' in the central Pacific, during which the carrier USS Liscombe Bay was sunk by another IJN sub with great loss of life just two weeks before.

Yep, Toxic, either people are afraid they'll offend somebody, it doesn't mean anything to them, or they really are ignorant. 

Patriotism is being replaced with globalism.

Wife's birthday.

What bothers me is even college kids do not understand why this day was important.  Most were not born during 9-11.    However not an excuse not to know about our history.     I have never quite understood why we went into Japan and built them back up after what they did to our troops consistently in the pacific, the horrific treatment.

I get what your saying and I agree but if you never lived through an event then it's not quite as  relevant to you. As an example most in this generation never experienced anything like 911 but after they did they could appreciate the sacrifices made in Vietnam, Korea, and WW1&2. Sometimes you have to witness life in all it's glory and horror to truly understand how it relates to you..
I'll admit when I woke up yesterday it was just another day but while doing some paperwork in the morning and looking for the date I immediately remembered the significance.

My mother told me that my father spent 4 years in France fighting the Nazi's and trying to save the life of the wounded.   After Hitler was gone, and others got to go home, he was ordered to the Pacific to continue to fight the Japanese.  Only because his commander felt  he had done his part, gone 4 years from his family, he needed to return.  Of course that was in 1945, not too far from Little Boy.

I suppose had he gone, the chance that my mom would have been a widow, with eldery parents and a young son,  and I wouldn't be writing this today.    As a kid,  Every such commemeration,  We always put out the US flag, flying on the bracket in front of the house.   So did most of the neighbors.

Today, on my street I am the only one with the colors displayed.  I also have a blue porch light for the two murdered police officers we had in Des Moines and for support.   It wasn't always that way,but it is now.

You can drive for miles around here and only a few with the Colors,   it seems that the parents have forgot, and passes that tradition on to their children.    Maybe instead of thinking that schools should be teaching these things,  we should be teaching them to our grandkids, kids, and the neighbors kid as well.

I posted this on facebook yesterday.  I only have 4-5 friends (family), so it didn't get out very far, but...

"Downtown Luverne from the north traffic light to the south traffic light. Not a single USA flag flying on a day that should be highly observed. Patriotism appears to be dying a fast death in this country. Is it fear of offending someone that we don't honor our flag or country or is it that people just don't care anymore. Maybe we should do like Europe did when they created the EU....we could call it the AU (American Union)...but Australia might take exception to us appropriating their abbreviation. We could join with Canada, Mexico, and South America so we could indeed become a globalist country. As the last survivors of the attack at Pearl Harbor breath their last breaths it seems that the USA's patriotism does, too....at least from what I can tell here in the downtown area of "The Friendliest City in the South". 😔

After posting it I found my old flag that the city left hanging in front of our business years ago, climbed up on a ladder and hung it from a sign facing mainstreet.  I, too, am guilty of remembering Pearl Harbor Day up into the morning.  I should have woke up and realized it.  I've got to try harder, we all do...or our children and grandchildren just won't "get it".  Way, way, way too important to let the "history" writers condense it to a short paragraph in our nation's history.

That's another thing. Despite the fact that we defend other countries, help countries that attack us to get back up, don't loot or extract payment when we defeat or liberate a country; we're called evil by those who can't even be bothered to learn history.
