Title: All in one and birds
Post by: C P RON on October 18, 2017, 10:03:51 AM
Greetings one and all,

My question is for those with all in on units like the Davis Vue.  I plan on mounting mine on a 5 foot poll attached to a tripod type mount on the roof.

Does anyone have problems with birds nesting on top.

Thanks

C P Ron

My Acurite 5 in 1 is mounted on a pole at about 10'. There is a bluebird houses close by and a bird feeder about 20' away. So far I have not seen or experienced any adverse effects from birds perching on the unit. The Acurite has been up for around 5 months. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Any specific reason for putting on your roof? That is typically not the preferred location since heat rising from it tends to interfere with temperature readings.

I live in a MFG home park and don't have a yard per say. I was just thinking to mount a all in one up high enough for better wind speed data.

Distance between my unit and neighbors is 30 feet give or take. I have a privacy fence that I can mount to,but roof line will impact wind readings.

This will be just for my personal use and to display on WU.  Bottom line I can forgo the wind speed accuracy and mount on fence.

Thanks for getting me to rethink were to install

I have one in the yard and have not seen birds anywhere close to it. I don't think it has a good sitting place for birds

All in ones that have the anny speed top of the unit appear to get away with it. unlike a Davis VP , birds seem to love them....
I wonder if its cause of the spinning being above? With my VP2 i had to mount the anny just below the OS anny, least that
way the birds will perch on the OS and not the Davis....

I've had my Davis VP2 operating 6 years now, and I can truthfully say that I have NEVER seen ANY bird sit or roost on any part of the ISS / anemometer assemblage...and...the wife has three "bird feeders" not more than 20-feet away which daily attract Finches and Doves. I *did* however, switch to the new "bird-spike" rain collector two years ago as a "preventive" measure.

Funny you mention that, I just caught two doves, one sitting on my RW tipper, and the other on the anny vane, in the same day. Haven't seen it before or since. I think the one pump from the ole' Daisy should discourage future behavior. :-)

I have a Gamo.  There is no "one pump" with those.  One pump and they're dead.

Besides, with that power, I'm afraid I'd miss and blow off one of the cups.  Would be my luck.

Sounds like you need a HEAVY-DUTY version of the Bug-Assault™ salt-shooting fly killer (ha,ha)!

That's why I have the Daisy, one pump is plenty to "get their attention" and not to hopefully harm them and not to possibly hurt the anny as well. Got'em on the first shot anyway, he left in a hurry.
