I know Stan (Silversword) is out on Maui.  He had posted in the Blitzortung forum a few days ago that he had planned to take his station offline to do some work on it but was considering waiting until after the storms passed.  Haven't heard anything from him since so don't know how he is fairing but I hope he and everyone else out there is doing OK.

Hi All,

Yes, I am still here, calm before the storms.  Getting prepared for the worst and hoping for the best.

Schools for Hawaii and Maui Counties are being closed tomorrow (Thursday) and on Friday the High Schools are being closed as they are evacuation centers.

Our Primary Elections supposed to take place on Saturday also.  Don't know what is happening so far with that.

I will do my best to keep my WX station up and running as long as my UPS will run if the power grid should shut down.

I am located about 1,500 feet ASL so will be safe from the ocean but may encounter high winds and rain. Flash flooding is also a concern but I am not in that type of terrain either.

One of the storm is predicted to pass South of Maui and the other one supposed to pass North of the Island.  Talk about a one/two punch!!! Left and right smacks..

Watch the National News as to the outcome of these two storm after next Tuesday when they pass through the State.

Feel sorry for the tourist that are here for a "Tropical Treat" that they planed for.

Here are the current prediction path for Iselle:

FORECAST POSITIONS AND MAX WINDS

INIT  06/1700Z 16.9N 144.9W   75 KT  85 MPH
 12H  07/0000Z 17.5N 147.1W   65 KT  75 MPH
 24H  07/1200Z 18.2N 150.4W   60 KT  70 MPH
 36H  08/0000Z 18.9N 153.2W   55 KT  65 MPH
 48H  08/1200Z 19.6N 156.1W   50 KT  60 MPH
 72H  09/1200Z 20.6N 161.1W   45 KT  50 MPH
 96H  10/1200Z 21.4N 165.8W   40 KT  45 MPH
120H  11/1200Z 22.7N 170.5W   40 KT  45 MPH

I am located at: 20.85N 156.31W.

Will try to keep you posted.

Some of the models take Iselle directly over Hawaii, but the mountains should tear it up quote a bit.  It may be getting stronger again before the initial approach.

Not sure how much the turbulence will affect Julio yet.

Here's another animated video of the approach of the the hurricanes via the GOES West satellite:

Click on the box next to the "Trop Pts" to see the projected path of the storms. As Stan mentioned, one is predicted to go north and the other right over top of the Big Island (Hawaii). The Sea Surface Temps are higher around the islands which makes it better for storms to increase in intensity. However, it looks like there are some high-level winds coming in from the NW which may tear apart the tops of the storms and thus, prevent further development.

Hi All,

Thank you for posting the tracks for the storms that is heading our way and concerns for Hawaii.  I have no time to do a page and look for them also.

I am the Skywarn coordinator for our County that encompasses three islands, Maui, Lanai and Molokai. We will be activating the Skywarn network starting noon tomorrow.

Schools for both islands' counties have been cancelled until Monday and will see what Julio brings...

Hope our power grids can hold up as much as possible.

Will report back when I can.

Hi All,

So far I just got rains but the worst is yet to come.

Hope that this storm don't pull out the cork from the volcanoes to expand the island.  It tried to loosen it with that earthquake.  I did not feel it here on Maui.

Hoping for the best this weekend.

Hi All,

So far I am doing good.  No power outage at my location but there are several area without power. Some road closures with trees down.

Had wind gusts of about 41 MPH. Could have been higher.

Survived the first punch, now waiting for the second one, Julio.

Will keep you all informed to and developments.

Thank you all for your thoughts and well wishes.

Hi All,

Looks like I survived these two storms.  Julio is going well North of my location and I should not be affected by it.

Iselle caused a lot of damage to the Southern part of the Big Island of Hawaii.  Many are still out of power and they are clearing out many downed trees that fell on the power grid. It may take several days to get all cleaned to where they can restore the power in the affected area.

Thank you all for your concerns and well wishes.

Hi,

I got approx. 4 inches in the last 24 hours or so. I heard that there were reports that on the Big Island had approx 36 inches during Iselle passing over the island.

Hi All,

More update.

The Southern end of the Big Island of Hawaii is still clearing out so that the power company can restore the power grid in that area.  There are still about 6,000 home without power and they are thinking that it will take several weeks to restore all of them. Just too many trees in that rain forest that came down with several homes destroyed.

Hope for the best for the folks in that stricken area.

Looks like there are more potential storms that are headed our way.

Short update.

There are still about 400 homes without power.  Most are recovering as much as they can.

A new threat to the affected area is a lava flow that is headed in their direction.  They just happen to be on the down slopes of an active volcano.

What more can they endure...

I remember when I lived on Oahu in the 70's and Kilauea began it's historic eruption. There were many homes that were engulfed in the lava flows that resulted. It was really sad to see people's entire lives and homes being destroyed and covered with hot, molten lava. However, I guess that is the chance one takes when they live on an island with active volcanoes.

Yes, there was a village called Kalapana that was entirely wiped out from a lava flow. There is also a geothermal system that is in that area that could be affected.

Are there any threats/warnings from hurricane Marie?

I don't think that we are in a direct threat from this hurricane. It is heading well North and East of us. But, we will see high surfs as well as the California coasts.

Lots of activity in the so called Ring of Fire, on the Eastern side, that is.

The West Coast, especially Southern CA, has been seeing large swells and high surf for the past week or two from Karina, Lowell, and now Marie.  Here is an example:

Quote
Event: High Surf Advisory
Alert: ...LARGE SURF...STRONG RIP CURRENTS...AND POSSIBLE COASTAL
FLOODING THROUGH THURSDAY...MAINLY IN ORANGE COUNTY...

.LARGE SOUTH SWELLS FROM HURRICANE MARIE WILL PEAK AT 10 FEET
EARLY THIS MORNING. THE SWELL WILL PRODUCE LARGE SURF...STRONG RIP
CURRENTS AND STRONG LONGSHORE CURRENTS THROUGH THURSDAY. MINOR
COASTAL FLOODING AND BEACH EROSION ARE POSSIBLE AS WELL.
SURF OF 8 TO 10 FEET IS EXPECTED TODAY ACROSS ORANGE COUNTY.
OCCASIONAL SETS AT SOME BEACHES DURING THIS TIME COULD REACH 12 TO
15 FEET. SURF GENERALLY LESS THAN 7 FEET IS EXPECTED IN SAN DIEGO
COUNTY...ALTHOUGH RIP CURRENTS AND LONGSHORE CURRENTS WILL BE
PARTICULARLY STRONG.
THE SOUTH SWELLS WILL GRADUALLY DIMINISH TODAY AND THURSDAY...BUT
SURF IN ORANGE COUNTY WILL CONTINUE ABOVE 7 FEET THROUGH THURSDAY.

...HIGH SURF ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1 AM PDT FRIDAY...

* SURF AND TIMING...TODAY...8 TO 10 FEET WITH OCCASIONAL SETS OF
12 TO 15 FEET AT FAVORED BEACHES. TONIGHT...6 TO 8 FEET WITH
LOCAL SETS TO 12 FEET. THURSDAY...5 TO 7 FEET WITH LOCAL SETS TO
10 FEET.

* COASTAL FLOODING POTENTIAL...SOME COASTAL FLOODING IS POSSIBLE
ALONG SOUTH FACING BEACHES AND LOW LYING AREAS TODAY...MAINLY
DURING HIGH TIDE LATE THIS EVENING.

* IMPACTS...WILL BE GREATEST ALONG THE BEACHES OF ORANGE COUNTY
WHERE DAMAGE TO PIERS AND OTHER STRUCTURES IS POSSIBLE...ALONG
WITH SOME BEACH EROSION. THE LARGE SURF WITH VERY STRONG RIP
CURRENTS AND LONGSHORE CURRENTS WILL CREATE EXTREMELY
DANGEROUS SWIMMING AND SURFING CONDITIONS. OCCASIONALLY LARGER
WAVES CAN APPEAR UNEXPECTEDLY...WASHING OVER ROCKS AND JETTIES
NEAR THE WATERS EDGE.
