Bodie State Park, CA Weather Station
« on: February 16, 2017, 08:03:41 PM »
Does anyone know what happened to the weather reporting station at Bodie State Park, CA (BDEC1)?  There has not been a report from them since January 21, 2017.

Looks to be under Reno's CWA. Call and ask.

Don't know why it's not reporting but here is a photo of a weather station in Bodie. I took it on October 18, 2016 while visiting the site. Not sure if this is the actual site that reports or not. I saw no power or any kind of wiring going to/from the station.

Also, I believe these may be manual observations and we have had some pretty bad storms passing through that area around the Jan 21 timeframe. It may be that they have shut down the facility due to those storms. There are winter commercial snowmobile activity in the area but heavy snow may have stopped it for the time being. We've had consistent storms throughout the area from January to present.

Jeez, when I read "ghost town", they weren't kidding.

Yup, there are only shells of the old buildings still there. Many of them are shored-up with bracing to keep them from collapsing. Only a couple are open in the summer/fall months for tourists to go inside. They have a full time ranger on-site and a small gift shop but that is about it. It's a long winding and dusty 13-mile road into Bodie off of Hwy 395 which is the only access road. It is an interesting place to visit but very desolate and off the main flow of traffic.

Here are a couple links with info about Bodie and its history:
Just saw this notice on the CA Parks webpage for Bodie - "The park will be closed due to the recent earthquake in Hawthorne NV. We are assessing any damage that may have occurred in the park and will reopen as soon as possible." That may explain why the weather reports stopped.
