Uploading historic data from VWS to Wunderground
« on: March 24, 2009, 06:33:13 AM »
Our club weather station was set up in February 2006, but we didn’t join the Weather Underground (Station ID IENGLAND172) until June 2008. I would like to upload archived data for 2006, 2007 and the first 6 months of 2008 from VWS (v14 p31) to Wunderground, so 'completing' the station history. As far as I can see, selecting Upload Archived Data on the Wunderground settings screen in VWS only uploads the current archive file. The VWS Data folder contains four files named 20xxDbase.csv, one for each of the years 2006—2009, with records at 30 min intervals, which is the interval I have scheduled for Wunderground uploads. Am I right in assuming that what I need to do is upload those 2006, 2007 and 2008 csv files? If so, exactly how do I do it (I certainly don’t want to trash the existing station history in the process)?

Thanks guys. You'd think it would be possible, maybe with a bit of juggling with archive data files.

Hello Peter, I half expected that would be the reply, but wasn't quite sure. If there is a way to upload historic data to Wunderground, the guys here will know.

Try contacting Wunderground and ask the question.

I don't think you'll be able to.  The "archive" data VWS usually talks about would only be either data in your datalogger with a Davis, or the data that has been missed since last successful up load.

I'm thinking the latter.  So you won't be able to upload the old data in the database.  Just any data that was missed since last upload to WUnderground.

OK, here is the official reply from Weather Underground Support:

"Hello,
Unfortunately, you can not add past data to the site.
Thanks for supporting Weather Underground!"

Shame, but there it is,

I have done this many times using a Python script I wrote. It's specific to the data format that wview uses, but perhaps it can give you some ideas. Take a look: http://www.threefools.org/weather/wunderfixer/

I don't know why WU says it can't be done.

Thank you for that, Tom. Not sure I'm clued up enough myself to use your script, but I can maybe find someone who is. I'll post again here if I get any further with it.

strange they say that, as both WD and VWS upload missed data to WU OK

GBW, what I want to do is upload data from VWS for dates prior to the date our station first joined WU (see my starting post on this thread). Are you saying that can be done?

Re. WU saying it isn't possible, I assumed they meant they have things set up so that data for any date/time prior to the joining date/time are automatically rejected.

Robbie

Well, to test that theory I just posted a data point for 2 1/2 years before I joined (easy enough to do by conjuring up an appropriate URL), and WU took it just fine. Now *seeing* it is a different matter, as the drop down date lists only go as far back as when you joined. To see the data point I had to conjur up yet another URL. Still, it took it.

Bottom line is that you should be able to post the data, but you may have to have a custom user interface for your users to see the data.
