WS 28XX and WUHU wind gust reporting
« on: December 26, 2016, 06:30:45 AM »
There has been some previous discussion at www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=9210.0 on the fact that WS28XX units do not produce wind gust data for uploading to Wundermap etc.
WUHU gets around this by using the highest mean speed in the past ten minutes as a notional wind gust.  However, this is less than satisfactory, not least because the Wundermap dashboard page will then show the highest mean and gust speeds as having the same value.
There is a much better solution available, by using the TWEAK button on the WUHU interface which allows the user to apply a multiplier value to the wind gust. The value you apply depends on your situation. Typically gusts are about 1.5 times the mean speed but may be a little lower over flat terrain and a little higher in urban areas.
This is still, obviously, an artificial value, related directly to the mean speed but is more sensible than the algorithm currently used by WUHU.
