Anemometer readings quit after moving station.
« on: July 01, 2018, 08:06:24 PM »
I recently had to move my VP2 outdoor station about ten foot so the electronic rain gauge would be out from  under a tree that over grew it. The cable running to it from  my anemometer had to be shortened. Since I moved the station the wind direction and velocity have quit reading. The wind direction reads west and the velocity reads 0. I checked the ohm meter readings on the cable from the anemometer using the information in the following link....                                     http://www.lexingtonwx.com/anemometer/
and they seem OK. Do I need to do something to the station to get it to recognize the anemometer again? It had worked for years before I moved it. Any ideas?

You should not have to do anything to the ISS.

The easiest diagnostic is to call Davis and ask them to send you (free) an anemometer test cable.

Exactly how did you connect the multimeter to the cable, to do that test?  Exactly how did you shorten the cable?  Check to make sure there isn't something/stuff in the cable socket on the ISS, etc.

[My suspicion would be that the connector isn't installed properly]

I would be looking at the shortening of the anemometer cable, how did you do that?

It appears that the only things that changed was the move and a splice.

I second the question of "how did you shorten the cable?".

Cutting a section out from between the plug at the end and the anemometer at the other end and then splicing the ends together matching color-to-color would have been my choice.  Maybe you need to re-check the splice and insure no loose wire strands, etc.,?  Triple check the plug-in.

Did the anemometer possibly get bumped while the move was being made?

If the reed switch goes bad you get zero wind speed, I believe.

I would be very suspicious of the connections/splices...

Best wishes,
Ed

The lack of response from DAVE Z in 4 days is probably significant.

Maybe, maybe not.  He may have other things more important to take care of and intends to come back and check replies later.  It's him that's trying to get something fixed, not us, we're just offering up advice.  ;)

I called Davis and had them send a test cable and checked it that way. The station was fine . I checked what resistance on their cable and tested the resistance readings on my cable coming down my tower and figured out what the station needed and what wires it needed to be hooked to.

It was just a case of wiring needing sorting?  Good deal!   =D>
