davisticker.class problem
« on: August 17, 2008, 12:23:42 PM »
Could be I should go a different route, but for now I'm using the scroller "davisticker.class".

I want to put a generic .txt file onto my server that will display in the scroller, so I can change the content as needed. No problem, I have modified the HTX template so that in the HTML code the scroller looks for a file instead of having the text embedded in the HTML page. This works...

The problem comes in when using the "datainterval" parameter to tell the scroller to check for new contents (60 second check)--it just doesn't seem to work, at least not in Firefox. I've tried clearing the cache, and then refreshing the page, but it will still not read the new contents of the file. Haven't tried IE.

If I completely exit Firefox, then restart Firefox and open the page, the new contents of the file display properly...

A bit baffled at this point...

Back when I used the davis sticker I recall I had some issues in Firefox (and the old Mozilla browser) getting it to work right.  I think I found a setting in Firefox somewhere that would get it going.  But I figured my visitors would probably not go to the trouble of changing from the default settings in their browser so I just quit using it.   I had a similar issue with XML I was testing at the time.

There may well be another work around for it but I never figured it out.

Yeah... given that the date stamp on the "latest" davisticker.class file is from 2001, I'm not really surprised that it may not work in Firefox (was the original Mozilla even around in 2001?)

I may have to look for other Java type text scrollers...

Maybe time to try 'something completely different' and use JavaScript and DHTML (avoids loading the sluggish Java engine)

I'm sure one of those would allow you do do what you'd like with a lot less overhead :D

I think I was still using Netscape Navigator at that time along with IE.

Mozilla was around then:

Thanks for the link Ken... I think I might have found that site yesterday while searching for "text scrollers"...

Well just tried out the weatherlink web site builder and found the ticker doesn't work well with Firefox, so I came here and look like it doesn't work for other either. So sent an email to Davis with my complaint. Told them it makes there product look like crap and it has there logo and link on the page and it need to be fixed..   #-o
