If you decide to go the "do-it-yourself" route vs. invest in a pre-constructed unit, check out www.geekalerts.com/solar-mini-clip-fan/ . Might give you some ideas and the price ain't bad either.

Dan

Last year I tried to adapt one of those "clip on your car window to keep it cool while parked in the sun" solar fans.  I didn't have the imagination or talent for it (or a soldering iron, either).  Something like Lars got would require minimal talent (that's me).

All of this has got me thinking about all the different places solar panels are used, and where I might unexpectedly  buy them in my local stores.

My thoughts at this point....
Lars's idea is by far the best professional design, but I am not sure I want to start from scratch again with everything plus building a new shield.
The Walmart solar panels are kind of large in size, so mounting is an issue.
The "clip fan" idea is cheap and includes the fan as well, but the reliability may not be there.  Plus according to the site it may up to 20 working days to get them once I ordered it.

So thanks guys for confusing me even more, on what to do. #-o  .....but keep those great ideas coming. :-)
I already have a this fan, so I am halfway there. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102826
I would like to be able to modify my current shield and mount it here as easy and "sight-ly"as possible.

Thanks for starting the thread Lars.  Sorry I stole it out of your hands and ran with it.  :-)    You got an awesome setup and you always come up with some really nice professional looking setups.

It took me a week to build and mount the shield, and I can say that it was not the easiest thing to build, the most difficult was to mount the fan.

So, will this solar fan run for six months then be off for six months?

If I had that fine piece of equipment, it would run all year long. \:D/

Axel do you want to sell it, and build version 2?   Just Kidding.

As long as the sun shines so will the fan spin.

I think that is the longest URL I've seen in my whole life.  :)  No wonder you are so far away.  LOL

Anyway, I'm going to order a video card fan (5v) and a small solar panel.  Costs about 15 bucks in total and fab up a FARS (for my home telemetry system).

No, i'm not north of the arctic circle if you click the link below you will see where i am

You are in the southern part.

I thought the Arctic circle was further south than it is.  (I apologize for my lack of geographical recall).

However, that made me curious.  The link you provided didn't show the arctic circle. I looked further and found a map and the Arctic Circle is easy to see.

I never realized that a weather hobby would involve so much geography!   ](*,)

I suppose next I'll have to do math and stuff, too!

I am think of one of these for the solar power (6 v). http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.17440 A two buck video card fan and I am done.  :)

Total cost is under $16 USD.

This question may be ignorant but if the fan runs during the daytime and its cold out, will that affect the temp readings and possibly reduce them as more air is being pulled passed the temp sensors?

Nope, the air being drawn across the sensor is the "ambient temp" air, it can not get lower than what it already is.

However, If you face a fan onto your skin, it will feel cooler, because you are "drawing heat" off of your body faster than your blood stream can replenish it.   <--------- known as wind chill.

The whole purpose of the fans is to keep stale air pockets from forming and getting trapped in the shields.  This also helps the humidity level readings in the same manner as well.

I hope this makes sense. :-)

Makes perfect sense, thanks. I'm still learning the technical aspects of this weather stuff. I'm curious how this would work for a Vantage PRO 2. Axel's set up seems to have the fan on the top of the temp sensors. I believe the temp sensors on the VP 2 are on the bottom. Again, excuse my ignorance as this is still new to me.

As for Axel or Lars his setup is based on what he can find to make a "working model" for him.  There are heated debates over "pulling the air across the sensor" or "pushing air over the sensor".  Some folks believe one method or the other is better for your temps, AND some do it a certain way to keep "fan intake debris" like bugs or airborne seeds from entering their equipment.  I say whatever works for you.....and I am sure others will have opinions as well about it.

I only started thinking about it after seeing this thread. I wasn't interested in shelling out a lot of money to accomplish this but just wondering how I could do something similar for my station. I don't know enough about the ISS to know where or how to do something like this. None-the-less, a great/affordable idea!
