Title: Adding Weather Alert signup to website
Post by: wxcrw on August 29, 2008, 10:20:01 AM
Since a tornado ripped through my area (3 miles away from my home) I have been making changes to my site to provide more information regarding hazardous weather conditions near my station. Step one was to get my mobile site working, with more information about current conditions. The next step is to send email/text messages of alerts directly to my phone.

I have been pondering this for a few days now, and wanted to make sure the answer wasn't already given on this or other forum. I've noticed alot of your all have email signups on your websites for alerts/forecast/ etc.. The format of the signup page is nearly identical on most pages, which leads me to believe this is a common script/program/ or service everyone uses. What is everyone using for these distro lists?

Regards,
Shawn

These are the 2 sites I'm most familiar with off the top of my head. I've run across at least 6 more in my surfing around. They both appear to be running CarterLake templates. I guess this isn't as common or easy as I thought. :)

I asked Tony from http://www.thorntonweather.com (http://www.thorntonweather.com) directly about "what he uses?" Tony is great and does a very good job supporting fellow enthusiast. He answered me in the Rocky Mountain Weather Network forums, and I thought I would share. Here is link to his full response:

Turns out he is using a combination of Interwarn from StormLink Inc. http://www.interwarn.com/iwdesc.html (http://www.interwarn.com/iwdesc.html) and the email funtion built into Weather Display.

Interwarn looks great for emailing alerts, and has a bunch more functionality built into the software. I like the fact that I don't have to engineer anything, but install/configure/enjoy. I'm gonna hold off purchasing/installing until the new weather server is up and running. No sense installing 2 times in 1 week.

Not being a weather display user, I'm still searching for a Virtual Weather Station/PHP/Javascript solution for emailing of forecasts. This may boil down to emailing the NWS forecast or forecast discussion everyday at midnight or something. Shouldn't be difficult...

Thanks for the information ALITTLEweird1. I have looked at CarterLake's site a bunch, but he doesn't have a contact us form script or email alerts/forecast scripts. Carmosaic.com however does, great find.
