My New WebCam
« on: February 02, 2007, 05:04:24 PM »
Well, I finally made a decision about a webcam.  I went back and forth between something like Chris's:

http://www.capeweather.com/webcam.html

and Darrell's:

http://itsyourweather.com/cam.html

I decided to go with the digital camera.  It was a little cheaper and I liked the high resolution.  I am not able to  show live video (hope I don't regret it later  :? ). Anyway,  I don't have the page complete yet; however, the image is being loaded here:

http://eetee.us/station/webcam/webcam.php

Feel free to take a look and tell me what you like/dislike.  I'll probably have it in the web-page by this weekend.

Many thanks to ALL the member of this thread:

http://www.weather-watch.com/smf/index.php/topic,21797.0.html

who pushed me over the edge and helped me get it done.

-E

EDIT:

Well As the sun goes down, I see that I need to correct the reflection from the window - nighttime captures are good though.

That's an active weather community full of folks who are always glad to push one another over the edge.

BTW... anyone know where this edge is?

That looks great!  Good resolution and a fantastic view.  The size at 1024x768 may be a bit large for some viewers.  My stats for all of last year show that about 13% only have 600x600, and another 60% are at 1024x768.  Remember that those at 1024 will still have to scroll to view the image in the browser even set to full screen because of borders, etc.  Just a thought.

I really love the view, what body of water is it?

Its a view of the Ohio River from my office.  I think you are right about the size.  I have scaled it down and set up a link to the full size image.  The new page (still rough) is here:

Rick, thank you very much for the feedback.

That is a very impressive image! Very clear and the details look great especially near the bridge. What kind of Cam is that anyhow? Great selection whatever it is.  :D

Chris:

Its an Olympus C-4000 digital camera.  Its four or five years old.  I actually set it up using tips that YOU posted regarding your  webcam;  I needed the usb extender that you used.  It worked great!  Thanks for the info.

Not to get off topic, but are you telling me that you took a normal point and shoot digital camera and made it your webcam?  If so, please email me or PM a link to how I do this.  I have a Toshiba IK-WB11A network camera and was going to see if I could get it to work somehow.  Also I have a couple of older digital cameras collecting dust.  If I can put them to use then please point me in the right direction.

By the way that image is stunning - Nice work!

Looks great! I should maybe think about using my old Sony Mavica digital cam for something. I thought about putting it up for grabs on ebay lately but now that may change. Thanks for the info on the cam and I'm glad that cable worked out ok for you.  :D

Yes, you are correct.  I had a VERY old camera laying around and the software was free.  I spend about $35.00US total for the setup.  The best part about the set up is the low light images.  Take a look at the page at nighttime!  Just no video though :cry: .  The link that made me aware of the possibility is here:

Also, there is a forum with a little additional info here:

Hope this helps :)

Are you saying that you can't use your IK-WB11A?  That is one of the cams I use on my site.  I use it with Image Salsa.  Let me know if you need help setting it up, I have a lot of undocumented http codes.

Rick,

Not saying that at all.  I am just pretty green in the cam area here.  If I don't want to use ImageSalsa are there other ways to get a feed to my site?  As you know this is a pure network camera which you connect to via IP and can control.  I honestly didn't know if it could be used or not or if it would have good enough quality to stick on the web.

I'd be grateful for any push/shove/kick to get me started.  I promise not to email constantly for help.

Greg,

Here are a few lines of HTML to use with your Toshiba cam.

To get  live stream:
Code: [Select]
http://[IPaddress:port#]/user_view_S.htm
To get a single snapshot image:
Code: [Select]
http://[IPaddress:port#]/__live.jpg?&&& (note that this line has two underscores before the word live)

The above needs to have your IP address and port put in them to replace the brackets & text, and if your camera IP address is a non-routable IP address that it gets from your dsl modem or router you will need to do some port forwarding in the router to make it work for people outside of your network.

For example, if you set up your cam inside your network and your router gives out IP addresses to your PCs in the 192.168.1.x subnet, you should program your cam with a static IP of 192.168.1.200 (200 is not a magic number, just one that isn't used elsewhere on your network).  Also set your cam up to use a port such as 8080 so it won't interfere with port 80 web use.  After you change the port used by the cam, you will have to use that port every time to get to it, even for configuration.  Then test your can internally by browsing to the admin screen http://192.168.1.200:8080/adm_login.htm

Once you get it working so you can see it on port 8080 and you can view images using http://192.168.1.200:80/__live.jpg?&&& you then have to make some changes in your router so visitors can come to your cam and get through your router.  First you need to find out the external routable IP address of your router or modem.  You can find this out by going in to the configuration screen for your modem or router, usually by entering the internal IP of the router in a browser.  In this example that would be something like 192.168.1.1.  Consult your manual.  You can also find out your routable IP by going to http://whatismyip.com and it will tell you your routable IP address.  Let's assume it is 38.116.129.242.  This is the address that the world can use to get to your DSL modem or router.  We now need to configure the router to send them to your camera when they get there.  Remember that we put your camera on port 8080?  So, any traffic that comes into your router looking for port 8080, we want to send it to your camera.  To do so we set up a port forward rule in your router.  Every router is a little different, but most will ask for the external port to forward and the internal IP address and port to forward to.  You may need to read the manual a bit.  If you have trouble you can send me an email and we'll go over it on the phone.

The Toshiba is a great low-light cam, and I'd love to see you get it active on your site.  This may be way too much information or maybe not enough, either way, let me know what you do need and let's get this thing working.

The only thing I would add is that unless you have a fixed "external" WAN IP address, it may change over time (normally you pay your ISP extra to have a fixed IP address).

But this is easy to get around... there are a few services that offer free mapping to your IP address. I use DYNDNS http://www.dyndns.com , sign up for the free service.

If you have a Dlink router, you most likely will have to run a little utility program on your computer that will update dyndns, other modems (and possibly the new Dlinks) have a dynamic IP notification service that dyndns will accept. Apparenly the Dlink router function for  dynamic IP doesn't work properly, and Dlink doesn't care... anyway...

So for example, if your WAN IP was something like 38.116.129.242, and you would access your camera with 38.116.129.242:8080, using DYNDNS it would become something like:

dundee.dyndns.org:8080 (where DYNDNS would convert it to your actual physical WAN IP address).

Rick & NCPilot

This is great info!  I did a bit of playing last night and was able to see my cam from the world.  I am using a 10 dot internally and know my external IP.  What I did was instead of port forwarding I put the cam out on the DMZ totally exposed.  Not sure if it's the smartest idea, but hey if someone wants to hack my camera go for it.

So now that it's able to be seen I think all I have to do is add it to my site with the tags you provided Rick.  I am using the wireless function on the camera which may not be the wisest since it's only a 54mbps WAP.  However, I don't want to run cat 5/6 to the final destination.  Unless of course you recommend this.

Now my only other question about this camera is if it can be an outdoor camera.  It looks pretty non-insulated or weather proof.  I am assuming I'll need to buy or build an enclosure box for it.

Lastly, I turned off the cam so you won't be able to see it until I turn it back on and configure.  I might do some type of dynamic DNS for the cam as well.  All new uncharted territory for me.  I can do the networking, but the cam stuff is different.  Though I think I've got it.

Thanks guys!

Greg, no need to build or buy an enclosure, the cam is already outdoor ready.  Mine has operated in -10 to -25  :o  for the past few weeks, no problem.  Here is a picture of it taken from my Canon PTZ cam (there is a preset on the Canon to look at the Toshiba):

Can you post a link to the cam pic?  I'm running wireless as well, no problem.  Glad you got it working!

So rain won't damage it?  I don't really have an overhang or a porch to put it under.  I see that the camera is enclosed, but the sides are open for the mic input / SD card insert.

Right now the cam is inside pointing at me in the shack.  I'm a bit camera shy so I'm not going to post a link  :)   When I get it pointing at something other than me I'll gladly share.

Do you recommend a constant stream or just the __Live snapshot with refresh?

Gary,

I don't think you need anything to protect it if you use the plastic visor/cover as shown in the pic below.  I previously had mine mounted on the back of my house, totally exposed to the wind and weather.

When I moved it under the front porch overhang I removed the visor.

If you have bandwidth to spare you could offer both streaming and single shots.  Another alternative is to post a single shot that refreshes every 5 seconds for 2 minutes or so (only the pic refreshes, not the entire page).  Here is how to do so.

First, use notepad to create a Javascript file on your web server named imagecounter.js containing the following:
Code: [Select]
var camImage = 'http://[IPaddress:port#]/__live.jpg?&&&';
var refreshIntervalSeconds = 5;
var secondsLeft = refreshIntervalSeconds;
var reloadCount = 24;

function startCount() {
  if (reloadCount < 1) {
     document.webCam.timer.value = "-----";
    return;
  } else {
      startClock();
      }
}
function startClock() {
  if (secondsLeft > 0) {
    if (secondsLeft < 10) {
      document.webCam.timer.value = '0' + secondsLeft;
    } else {
      document.webCam.timer.value = secondsLeft;
    }
    secondsLeft = secondsLeft - 1
    timerID = setTimeout('startClock()', 1000);
  } else {
  date = new Date();
  imageNumber = date.getTime();
  document.webCamImage.src = camImage + '?' + imageNumber;
  secondsLeft = refreshIntervalSeconds;
  reloadCount = reloadCount - 1;
  startCount();
  }
}

In your html page somewhere before the cam image you have to add a few things.  First, call the above code by adding a line:
Code: [Select]
<script type="text/javascript" src="imagecounter.js"></script>
Then you need to add a 'onload' statement to an existing image so the timer starts when the page is loaded.  I add it to a new.gif just before the cam image, as you can see in the code below.  At the location where you want the cam image and countdown timer, create a form to contain your cam image.
Code: [Select]
<img onload="startClock()" src="new.gif">

<form name="webCam" action="#">
Image below will refresh every 5 seconds for two minutes - Auto-refresh in: <input type="text" name="timer" size="2"> seconds.
<img src="http://[IPaddress:port#]/__live.jpg?&&&" name="webCamImage" alt="Refreshes every 5 seconds..." title="Refreshes every 5 seconds..." width="640" height="480" border="0">
</form>

Obviously replace the ip address with your cam address, or any image file reference, and change the width and height if needed.  The form name must match the name used in the .js file for the document, so either don't change it or change both.

You can change the refresh interval and the total time before it stops refreshing by modifying the var refreshIntervalSeconds = 5;
and the var reloadCount = 24; Note that 24 indicates that it does 24 refreshes at 5 seconds totalling 5*24=120 seconds total time. For 3 minutes, set it to 36.

This will work for any image that changes, either on disk or one that can be refreshed from a camera or other source.  Just change the image reference in both the .js file and in the form reference.

So now we want to see it work on your site.  You have a really nice clean look and it needs a cam image.  Post a link!

Guys, any suggestions on the best place to pick up one of these cameras, since they are discontinued? Was looking around the web, found many places that had them listed, but not available. :(

Look for the newer version of it, IK-WB15A. It replaced the IK-WB11A. I have one that is just sort of collecting dust at the moment because I haven't switched to a static IP yet. You should be able to find one for around $500.

How did you end up with the camera and no visor?  I thought they were sold as a single unit.  I've never seen one shown without the visor.
