Today my acurite 5 in 1 mounted at 33 ft recorded a gust of 40 MPH. I am not sure if that is even high enough, since I saw a 70 ft tree split off near the half way mark and fall as this wind occurred. Also power failed just down from me. This storm has been fierce.

My WS-2080 is mounted at about 10' AGL and recorded a peak of 18.3mph. I know we had higher winds in the open. My station is in the back yard and has the protection of trees in the neighboring yards.

Oddly enough, my WS-1400-IP recorded a peak of 17.5mph several times that don't correspond with the WS-2080 at all. The two units are mounted within 3 feet of each other at the same elevation.

You can see how closely the two units are mounted in this video. The Davis Anemometer is mounted in the middle but is not currently reporting so I don't have data from that unit.

I once owned a 2080 and I can assure you they DO miss peak wind gusts, are extremely unreliable and overall not a good station to rely upon for maximum wind gusts. In fact any station that has a sample reading longer that a couple of seconds apart is doing its owner a dis-service. Best way to capture maximum gust readings is with an analog (dial) meter or something like a Heathkit 4001, 5001 or the Capricorn II from Hinds. The Heathkits are instant digital and the Capricorn II has a sample rate of twice per SECOND.
