Russian Space Craft Coming Down
« on: January 15, 2012, 12:51:01 AM »
Russia's botched Mars probe mission Phobos-Grunt is fast approaching a fiery death, with just one or two days remaining before it falls from space, experts and Russian space officials say.

Story here.

Nestled inside that re-entry sample capsule is the Planetary Society's tiny Living Interplanetary Flight Experiment (LIFE) biomodule, which carries a select set of microorganisms.

IMHO, that should NOT EVER be allowed.  Who knows what results could occur if we leave microbes on a planet that might support life.

Don't we give enough Darwin Awards already???

Definitely agree! I think NASA has very strict measures in place to guard against just that with sterile clean rooms, etc. Guess it isn't a world wide practice. So what good is it to protect other worlds from contamination when only part of us practice it?

That's kind of like the pollution problem.

(forum disclaimer:  that is NOT an invitation to start about climate change again!)

After reading that and seeing how much 'space junk' falls to Earth every year makes you wonder how much radioactive material is scattered around, both on land and in the oceans. :-k

I didn't realize Russia aimed all their stuff towards Chile.    I'll bet they don't appreciate that (or else they're paid well).

I've wondered at times about the transfer of microorganisms, bacteria, viruses not to mention gases and radioactive particles and such on space missions.  I suppose the extreme fast change in climate would make it unlikely for anything to survive long.  But still there are a lot of things we don't know.

What happens if that microorganism is 10' 480lbs with six eyes, a long tail and flies a spaceship back to the mother planet in 500 years?

As of now, they're scratching their heads wondering where it came down.   :-k

A&E and the History channel probably have a film crews and salvage boats en-route to make a new show for spring.   #-o

Latest report is that it cruised "accidentally" through one of our radar tracking stations beams in the Marshall Islands (we don't have one there...that's public). A leaked report said that a simulation showed that the main computer drew too much power, would reset at the wrong time due to overload and probably drained the batteries.
