My PWS Davis Pro V2 24h in Central Florida
« on: December 24, 2017, 03:57:58 AM »
Here are some shots of my newly erected PWS.  Pole diameter is 1 3/4".  ISS sits at 6'.  Anemometer at 10'.  The Vantage Connect is at 13' situated about 50' away on the Observation Deck facing South.

I had originally wanted to have the cable from the Anemometer run inside the pole but decided against it as it would entail altering the ends of the cable at either the Anemometer end or the ISS receptacle end.  The 36' feet of extra cable is wedged between the ISS and the pole for now.

The plan is to lay sod around the base of the pole.

Nice, I would only comment that the anemometer - since someone will if not me - would be better if it could be placed higher up.

30' ft high is the recommended height for PWS anemometers but many times compromises have to be made in siting considerations, especially in suburban settings.

You would be well served though if you can get the anemometer a bit higher but that's purely a matter of choice for the best wind measurements.

Other than that, looks good.     Always a fun time when you get it up and working :).

Yep...32 to 33 feet would be ideal.  It would also require guy wires which ain't happening.  I can attest that the wind is higher at elevation as its always breezier on the observation deck as opposed to the stagnation we encounter at ground level.

I topped out the pole at about 10' AGL to keep the shake down.

I deliberated for months on where to place the station.  I wanted it in view but not over bearing, especially if the wind was being active and even more so if any active systems were rolling through.  The winds with these systems, and Irma was a perfect example, tend to favor from the east and this placement and 10' elevation was a compromise I could live with for now.

Thought about that but not for very long. Too much shade or obstruction for the ISS and the Tower in itself, I wanted to keep somewhat clean in appearance.

Not the ISS, just the anny itself with the remote transmitter available. Many of us do this.

Oh my...didn't realize there was a remote option for the Anny.  Will definitely check that out and report back.  My initial concern is the reliability and life span.  Any thoughts on how it "stacks" up?

So in this case, the new remote Anny (love that slang btw as I was getting tired of looking up if I spelt it correctly) costs about $130.  Is it possible to have the ISS receive 2 wind inputs?  One at 10' and the other up high at 30'?

Believe it or not, I enjoy seeing the Anny doing it's thing from atop the observation deck.  Not sure I would get as much enjoyment seeing just the pole and the ISS sitting there doing nothing.  Weird...I know.

The anny transmitter is independent of the ISS. It's  basically an ISS itself so it sends it's data directly to the console.
As for the console being able to receive data from 2 separate anny's, I'm not sure about that.
Someone else will have to chime in about that.

Seeing this set-up is out in the sticks, I don't have a console.  The Vantage Connect sends the data to Weatherlink and then distributes to CWOP and Wunderground.  I'm now seeing the Vantage Connect can only receive datA from multiple transmitters for temperature/humidity, not wind, so that shoots down the "down low, up high" option.
