With updates come permission popups (Win 10)
« on: June 18, 2017, 12:08:58 AM »
Issue I have never been able to solve for some reason.  Windows 10 on Aspire One netbook, UAC turned off in the registry, also set to never notify in the control panel.  I have Weather display installed in c:\wdisplay  (rather then in program files).

But still every time I upgrade to the latest version for the better of the next day I get intermittent popups asking permission to run the various secondary executables.  It's not my AV, it is windows and even if I uncheck to ask for permission the next update I have to do it all over again for any executable files that Bryan has made changes to in the update.

Worst part about it is that it stalls the whole program while it waits for permission to continue the secondary cron job.   #-o

Is there something I'm still missing in the setup?  I would upgrade weather display more often if I did not have to babysit it for the next day to make sure it stayed running thanks to Win 10.

This is not really a WD issue (i dont think) its 1 of Win 10 traits, in future, write down each one as it
pops up and then you will know which to open manually the next time you update, if you open manually
then you dont have to wait til it does it later on, the email one is the one that always got me, its one
you forget about lol

@ Mark, when was the last time you updated?
(i.e the longer the time period the more likely some of the cron programs have changed )

Brian, it appears to happen on each update for me, whether it being a month interval or a couple of days
I always have to allow WD, WU, email and i think one more, dont know if that helps, i just put it down to Win 10

Thanks for the replies :)

Last time it was about a year since I had updated which is longer than I usually let it go.  I'm able to white list it pretty well in my AV to leave it alone which also reduces cpu usage when every file as it is executed is not scanned for something harmful.  I was hoping maybe buried deep in Win 10 there was also a way to do the same that maybe I was not aware of.  :)

Hi Mark! I am also running Win10 and have never had the problems you are describing after updating WD versions. I'm running Win10 Pro on an HP laptop. After an update, WD and all of its background processes just run and Win10 doesn't complain at all. I must be doing something right, for a change.

Hi Don!

After all the battles you've had with hard drives, etc., you were over due for a break in the chain of problems.

I figured it must be a limited number of people having the issue.  Several times I searched here and over at Weather Watch for some ideas and never found much chatter about it.  So  I wonder what the difference could be?  I'm not running the pro version.  This is still my original netbook that originally came with XP.  Kind of wish I had stayed with Win 7 on it.  It seemed a lot more friendly to use for the utilitarian purpose of a dedicated weather computer.

Think i got it....... Windows Attachment Manager

Start the Internet Properties window.
Windows 7
Click Start, click All Programs, and then open the Accessories folder.
Click Run.
Type inetcpl.cpl, and then click OK.
Windows 8
From the Start screen, type inetcpl.cpl, and then press Enter.
In the Internet Properties window, click the Security tab, click the Ineternet zone (globe icon), and then click the Custom level button.
In the Security Settings window, scroll down to Downloads > File download.
Click to select Enable.
Scroll down the list further to Miscellaneous > Launching applications and unsafe files.
Click to select Enable
Click OK

Also cliking on any of the sub programs also did not ask for permission either :)

Rather than turning-off the feature, is there any way to add a program of known safe programs to a list so you don't have to defeat the security settings? Microsoft must have some kind of a list programs and it would be nice to be able to simply add WD and others to that list as needed.

There's really no need for an exception list since you could either unblock the file, or allow it "Run anyway" when prompted by SmartScreen. Afterwards, it should run without having to do this again

But it wasnt the smartscreen anyway, it was the file downloads  under internet settings

Scroll down the list further to Miscellaneous > Launching applications and unsafe files.

Thanks!  I'll check that out and see how it goes in the next couple of days.   8-)

We had some severe weather today and while all was running I did not want to take a chance of irritating anything.   ;)

Well 24 hours later with new update installed and so far so good.   8-)  I never gave thought to a setting in the in the internet settings but in hindsight the programs asking permission I think were all ones that either uploaded or downloaded from the net including sending emails.  I suppose one could go through and add them to the trusted list but since all that computer does is weather data work I'm not going to worry about it long as it remains stable and running.   UU

Bashy, Brian sent me to this post specifically for a problem I've always had with the .zip updates; i.e., the list of WD apps trying to start up and needing a response to the 'allow' message. However, this seems to be for W10 - I'm running W7 Pro. Can you point to something in there I can set to get rid of those messages? See also https://www.weather-watch.com/smf/index.php/topic,65338.msg524690.html#msg524690.

Thank you.

jgillett, I use this method to let certain program bypass Microsoft UAC. This might work for W10 as well.

Both of my settings were already as shown above. I changed the security level from medium-low to low but still got the usual message shown below for two files.

Have I missed something else?

Thank you to all.
