A Couple Things To Share
« on: March 31, 2012, 11:10:53 AM »
Recently Sebectec added .mp4 movie format to the time lapse feature.  I have been using .flv for time lapse on my site because it buffers and plays very nicely on a PC.  The down side is that .flv is not compatible with an Ipad or Iphone.  I am a solid PC guy, but I have had an Iphone for a few years and got an Ipad for Christmas.  It has been frustrating to not be able to view my videos on these devices.  So, when the .mp4 format became available I developed to it with the intention of making it available for Iphones and Ipads.  I am also putting this video up on a public folder every hour for the local media.  I was absolutely blown away with the quality of this video played on an Ipad.  This is really interesting how much better it looks on an Ipad than a PC.  I saved an exceptionally good video when we actually had an unusual color to the sky.  It was blue.... We don't really understand this in the Pacific NorthWet....  If you have an Ipad or Iphone view this video on it: http://www.skunkbayweather.com/PublicFiles/IpadTest.mp4 and then view it on a PC.  I really hate it when Apple gets it right....  I have to listen to my wife and her "I told you so"..... ](*,)

The second thing to share is a bit about our unique weather here.  We are at the northern end of Puget Sound in Washington state.  We have the Olympic Mountains to our west and the Straits of Juan de Fuca to our north.  As our weather systems come on shore from the ocean they usually come around the south end of the Olympics.  At the same they can roll around the north end of the Olympics down the Straits.  When these two systems collide it can create some lively weather.  We call this a convergence zone.  Yesterday we had some explosive activity.  I have seen worse, but this one is pretty good.  There are two hits in this video.  Watch the temp drop as the wind switches to the north.  On the second one the wind gusts to 31 and the temp drops from 52 to 41 in minutes.  http://youtu.be/PmWkWG_T8wQ?hd=1

Thought I'd share....

I viewed on a PC and the quality looks great. I don't have an Ipad o compare it to though. I wish Quicktime could do something about the load time. That video took about 30 second to load. About 65% of my visitors don't spent that much time looking at my site each visit. I still use the .swf format as there is no buffering, so there is no wait.

As always, you have a beautiful view there.

I agree about QuickTime on a PC.  It loads very poorly.  If you can, check this same video out on an IPad.... Even an iPhone.  It loads as fast, if not faster than a .flv.  It almost makes me think that Apple has dumbed down the PC version.....
