Leapin Lizzards
« on: November 01, 2017, 04:42:15 PM »
I live in southern Florida & I’m constantly seeing a lizzard (actually it’s an anole, which we have millions of), inside my Vantage Pro 2 radiation shield. Today I was getting erroneous readings on the dew point & humidity, & possibly the temperature. I took the station apart & found a frog in addition to the anole inside. Last time I cleaned the station, I also found a frog & anole. Now the station appears to be reading correctly.

Anyone know anyway to keep these little creatures out?

Could you cover it with a nylon mesh bag ... something like the bags dry onions are sold in?

Plenty of them critters up in here in Ocala but can't say I have seen them inside the radiation
 shield.
As mentioned above a screen of some sort would work. Like then screen on a front door.
Just wrap it around the shield keeping it tight so they couldn't slip under it. Secure both ends and also secure the top and bottom.

Yup, run a fan 24/7.

Running the fan 24/7 doesn't work as the anoles will stick their little heads into the fan. I've removed several until I started putting a 1/4" plastic mesh over the top of the fan. That keeps them out of the chamber.

Wow. Another reason for a case fan. If they tried that on mine, they'd never get past the initial "introduction", and decide this ain't the place to be.

Maybe, I’ll have to try some kind of mesh, but do you think that might affect the readings? I know I’ve had anoles living in there, probably one at a time and it never affected the readings before, it may have been the frog he was laying right next to the temp- humidity sensor.

Can't be any worse than lizard breath. ;)

My experience with the little green frogs is that they are about 90% water and they are not good at retaining the water. In other words, they pee on everything. If I leave my telescope outside under a cover, I have learned to leave a container of snake repellent under the cover also as the snake repellent also repels frogs. I think the plastic mesh would have a lot less effect than frog pee.

Some good ideas. I was thinking of encasing the shield in some fine wire mesh cut to fit around it.
The critters certainly like our stations, I took mine apart for cleaning and found a live bug on one of the plates.

Something like this with a pull string.
Just pull it over the top, tighten strings and you're done.
Trying to think where I could get something like this locally.

If you have a home brew supply store in your area, they should have them.  I use them to contain the hops when brewing, makes for clearer beer.
