Weather station Kit, wind direction, speed, gusts -> internet
« on: October 21, 2013, 01:03:38 AM »
Hi guys,

I am looking for options to make weather station with exporting to website. I am living in Thailand, on small island, I need to check windspeed, wind direction (thats the most two important things, others I dont need much, but it is OK to have). Basically I checked the options, and come to conclusion I would build something like this:

http://www.nevid.net/2012/10/13/the-weather-station/

I prepared list on amazon, what I would need:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/2ZGGMZ0R6BL4J/ref=cm_wl_rlist_go_o?

few questions:
- is this setup OK, or it is possible to do it cheaper (for example for Oregon I read those station do not have so long lifespan)
- I guess, when I will buy Davis Vantage Vue I will get fw >= 3.00, so I need to buy that expensive USB logger from them :(
- I dont need any console, I will stay 5 km from the hardware, so I will check data only on internet
- I dont want spend more than 800 USD...I guess Davis is the best quality for normal consumers...

Please advice, thanks.

I don't know about how things are bought/shipped to Thailand, but if you're able to purchase from American suppliers, you can get an unadvertised low price from many companies.  Just search through the What Weather Station thread, there will be many shops listed.  You can get a low unadvertised price for dataloggers and IP things, too.

Welcome and good luck!

Also, Look for DanS.  He lives in Thailand, too.  :)

yes, I am able to buy some things directly from US, maybe twice per year. First I need to decide _what_ to buy, then I can look for some discount shops. Thanks for that, I will check that topic and comparing prices, but first - I got in Amazon everything what is needed to build such a station, nothing else needed or you would change something?

thx I will check also with DanS.

Frankly, the alternatives, while cheaper generally do not last.  The Raspberry Pi  is one good choice if you like to get your hands dirty.  There are several threads on this forum about using it.  Another option is to hook your system is a Meteobridge from Smartbedded.  About a hundred bucks for everything.  Rock solid and easy to implement.

Thanks for suggestion. I will stay with Raspberry Pi, I like that idea, never got one in the hand, I am programmer, so it wouldn't be big problem. I check also thread http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=19403.10

I really like to run there

http://www.weewx.com/ and I recently found https://github.com/torhve/Amatyr (output here http://yr.hveem.no) - I dont think this would be possible with Meteobridge. Basically I like "open" hw/sw which community can hack.

But it is quite pitty I have to buy 120+ USD USB cable...well if somebody is selling some workaround, would be good to know.

Maybe You can take a look at this http://wunderweatherstation.wordpress.com/ as well. It's a project that I have been working on. It's partially DIY in that you have to do the housing and wind tree construction yourself.  The Wind instruments are designed for high resolution readings and are solid state with no electrical moving parts.  The station is directly on the internet via it's WiFi connection and sends the data to Weather Underground at intervals down to 2 seconds.
