Title: Roku WU App removed
Post by: miraculon on June 24, 2018, 08:23:39 AM
I saw that the Weather Underground Roku app is no more. It was my go-to place for the regional radar when I am getting dressed in the morning.

Apparently, rather than fixing it they removed it.

More WU entropy......  :-(

Weather Underground should release the code for the roku app to the community to maintain.  They might not have the resources inside their organization to keep this app going but there are lot of people who love the simplistic interface and quick radar and satellite images.  I'm sure we have some developers that would like to take it and run with it.

Weather Underground/The Weather Company is owned by I B f'n M. If they can't toss what is essentially the executive lunch bill for one day at maintaining for a year something their customers use and value then there is little reason to keep patronizing this business.

Apps these days are just web browser wrappers. The code is not in the app but rather inside the actual web servers. So releasing the source code would do little.

Not all apps are like this and I'm not saying this one is in this case....I really don't know which way it is for WU. But I'm just saying it may just be that it all resides on the web server. Netflix is that way (in the cloud), and YouTube (Android TV), and Amazon is that way to name a few.
