Warm Winter?
« on: December 14, 2006, 09:12:17 AM »
For my location, Lowell MA

Last January averaged 8.9 F warmer than average according to my records.
This November +5.5 F & so far this December +7.9 F .

Weak EL NIŅO conditions and zonal upper air flow across the Northern US should continue a milder the average winter for most of us.

See ENSO Discussion: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/enso_advisory/

Some talk about a change towards the middle of next week for the NE. Still a slim hope for a white X-Mas!

My departure from normal temperature for the month of December was:
+8.2F
This following November's:
+5.5F

The unusually mild conditions continue here in the Northeast US.

It would be interesting to see what departures from normal in temperature other PWS owners have recorded.
A good source of Climate averages for most locations in the US can be found here: http://cdo.ncdc.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/climatenormals/climatenormals.pl?directive=prod_select2&prodtype=CLIM81&subrnum=

Also, if you are interested, I am conducting a quick 2 question poll concerning Global Warming on my website. Please participate. Sorry about the pop-up ads.

Well if that is the case it wont't get started here in WV intil atleast next Tuesday. Forecasting 40's today and the fifties thru sun and back to 40's on Monday. I my self will disagree. This will be a true El Nino winter, mild and wet. Atleast for my neck of the woods.

Thanks,
Anthony

Well, this very odd winter season persists in New England. Although the second half of January was below normal for temperature the month on average was still 6.2 degrees above normal.
Thats:
Nov. : +5.5
Dec. : +8.2
Jan.  : +6.2

Also, I have measured only 2.8" of snow for the season in Lowell.
The nearest official snow total is from Bedford, MA (12 miles distant) counting only 2.9" for Jan.,  which sets a new record for low snowfall. Old record 4.9" (1988-89.

Here is the 06-07 winter season summary for Southern New England issued by the Taunton, MA NWS office. Again, warmer and somewhat drier than the climatological average across the region.
