Les, you are right about the Toshiba working much better in low light.  The Canon has mediocre low-light capability but great zoom control.  I do have a sodium yard light near the house that helps the Canon when it is pointed in some areas, but I also use the VB Admin tools schedule program to turn on night mode (b&w) between sundown and sunset.  I also stop auto-patrol at night.

I guess I'll put the Toshiba back up and use it for night viewing. Thanks for the tip on scheduling the night vision setting during the night time hours. It's better then it was, but it still can't carry the Toshiba's water for low light abilities.  :)

Bob, the cold weather kit is supposed to heat it and withstand a lower temp, but I didn't get the extra kit.  With the standard heater it was fine even when it was 15-20 below for days on end .

So then, I would venture a guess that the kit would be a larger heater to keep things warm at the lower temps. May be well worth the investment around here, since temps dip well below zero for most of January, February and into March. Sometimes even starts in December.

Bob, is it really that much colder than here in Meeker?  Take a look at the Tabular NOAA history on my site and see if you think you really need the extra heater.  I don't have it. In January we had zero to -22 for twelve days running, and this was a warm year!

I'll have to look at both sets of data and compare. I know back in 2004, the year I put my station up, we had a 2, almost a 3 week period that it didn't get up above -15 and got as low as -40. I wish I had my station up then, but I just let it sit in the kitchen. Wasn't going to freeze my arse off!   Being so close to the canada border and always get the dips in the jet stream, it gets pretty darn cold around these parts.

With the corner mount it still only sticks out from the wall about 12" or so.  My overhang is 24" but even a 12" would protect it I bet.  In the pic you may not be able to see but the bracket is mounted on the end of a log with two lag screws on each side.

What a great view Les!  It is amazing how the Canon can zoom all the way across the lake to Irby's Burgers (yours), or to a neighbors ranch (mine) to see deer almost a mile away.  8)

They are great cameras, they would be perfect if they had the Toshiba's night vision ability. Oh well, just another reason to run some more CAT5 thru the attic and re-install the Toshiba for the night time  :D

LOL, for the small cost, it would be work it I guess. Still trying to get them to build a big wall at the northern border, to keep the cold air out! :)

Speaking of distance, how far away are the old silos and the airport from your camera?

Also, my wife wanted me to ask you what kind of dog do you have, besides the Scottie? She was trying to see him/her and could keep up with him/her. She laughed and said that is one quick dog! :)

Hello Rick, Les,
I have to admit that VB-C50IR is amazing!  I also have a question about its zooming capabilities.  I guess the best thing would to ask Les... how far is the opposite side of the lake from you? (If you could give me a landmark) That would give me a visual measurement.

Thanks,
John

I think the area directly across the lake from me is about 1/8 mile, the clock tower and Irby's Burger place are even further away. I don't have any method to really measure the actual distance.

Here is another web site with the same camera and you can read the sings on buildings several blocks away from the camera position:

I would like to use the VM95 software to add my webcam to the Weather Underground webcam page here:

http://www.wunderground.com/webcams/index.html

However, I can't seem to be able to get the software to correctly FTP the picture?!?  I have successfully been able to use the FTP in VM95 to upload to my webcam page for quite some time:

http://eetee.us/station/webcam/webcam.php

I CAN get the picture to upload using other FTP software (WS_FTP, FileZilla, etc).  You can see the results here:

http://www.wunderground.com/webcams/ericisback/1/show.html

Has anyone been able to use VM95 to FTP pictures from their webcam to WU?  IF so, can someone possible post the settings here?  THANKS for any help!

Images can be uploaded at a maximum of once per minute, can be no larger than 150Kb

The recent image you have on there now is approx 215kb

The image I'm using is different than the one on the website (the software is creating two separate images).  I think the most recent file I uploaded is about 57k.  I don't think WU would accept the image if it was 215kb.  The file is here:

I was using my cam's internal ftp to send the pics every 2 minutes, but changed today to using ImageSalsa.  It works great and it allows me to include my overlay text and weather data on the feed.  I now have both camers posting to WU.

ImageSalsa is just a great product!  (Thanks Jason!)   =D>

FWIW, I worked it out.  My image software would not seem to upload to the WU servers (although it uploads fine everywhere else)?!?  In any event, I ended up loading up some other software I had (FTPGetter).  Works great for this application.  You can see the time lapse video here:

http://www.eetee.us/station/webcam/webcam.php

When I get to the webcam Monday, I am going to increase the pictures to four/hour (maybe more if the video is still too choppy).  Since my camera is a true digital camera it "snaps a picture" instead of a "screen grab".  The digital camera wil eventually wear out.  O well, its fun for now.

Hi All,

I've recently completed my Hi-Res camera and Video site and pretty pleased with the results (After many hours of tinkering and learning from the Weather Display forms).

The setup I use is :-

[VM95 - running 3 schedules, 1 day, 1 sunset, 1 evening producing the .jpg file only
Weather Display - Not processing the images, just producing the data.csv for ImageSalsa and uploading the weather underground and still image to website
ImageSalsa - Reading the VM95 and producing a sequential and fixed file with the csv weather data added from WD
MovieSalsa - 2 Configs, 1 produces a Daily Movie,1 the last 2.5Hrs, both with postprocessing cmd files to produce a yyyymmdd.wmv file a copy to an archive directory and also upload to the
www.southfreo.com websiteWindows Scheduler running the moviesalsa configs 1/ 11PM for Daily 2/ Every Hour
Weather Underground used on main page for a very lightweight daily movie
[/list]

Cheers

Kevin
