Good to go.  I will work on that before I get start messing with CWOP.  I am a ham, so I can use my call, but I see to log in as a ham, I need a password.  The guy that supposed to be issuing the password's email bounces now.  Where can I get a password for weewx to report my packets to FindU.  I could put it out over the air on APRS, but just more work, lol.

Thanks,
Chris Maness

I'm not a ham but according to this documentation there are two email addresses you can try to get the validation code or password. Have you tried both of these?

See #3 for email addresses:

Both bounced -- old emails I supposed.  Those people might not even be living still.

I suppose you could register your ham call sign with cwop-support@noaa.gov and then just use the regular CWOP server address cwop.aprs.net with -1 as the password.

Or try asking cwop-support@noaa.gov for the validation code. Maybe they do that now. Can't hurt to try. Let us know what happens.

If all else fails. Try asking in the CWOP sub on this forum to get more eyes on this issue. Maybe some other ham has some advice.

I asked about the data required on the CWOP sub group.  They are the ones letting me know that I need at least wind speed, direction and temperature.  I think I will get wind going first. That way I have a complete set.

Well can't hurt to go ahead and register your call sign for CWOP so that it is ready when you need it. Some people have been waiting weeks because of the government shutdown and then even now that the shutdown is over there seems to be a backlog.

Also I noticed that your Ecowitt GW1000 is still running firmware 1.3.0.  The latest version is 1.3.8. To upgrade the firmware you use the WS View app and then under More / Device Settings, there should be an Upgrade Firmware button. That button is only there when there is a new firmware. Since I believe you put the GW1000 on the Raspberry Pi hotspot you may need to put your mobile device on that hotspot too unless the Raspberry Pi created a network bridge.

That is not true.  You do not need any speed or direction.  I operated CWOP (by Ham RF) for several years and then again did some testing a few weeks ago using nothing but temperature. Using 100% homemade hardware (and microcontroller firmware).

I'm trying an email using Russ's professional email address.  Will get back to you offlist with what I find.

I can give you your passcode, but I'm not an official source of that so would prefer you get it using the "by the book" method.

Regarding the wx parameters you seek to send over CWOP (by RF), that is quite easy to do with a simple microcontroller that outputs a serial stream that can imitate a Peet or any other serial stream wx device.

Okay, I just read your question about what wx params you "need" and the answer you received in the other section of the wxforum.

It appears that you misinterpreted the answer which is technically correct but not easy to understand.  I don't have too much time to think out and type a nice unambiguously worded answer, but suffice to say the key is that those fields have to be included, but they can be filled with DUMMY entries which will be ignored.  That's where the "....." field entries come in, so I use quite a few of those dot dummy fields in my APRS transmitted packets (CWOP by RF).

It hasn't bounced, so the email I have for Russ, who is the creator of the whole CWOP concept, is valid.  I will find out in the next day or so if he's in good health and can get you your ham CWOP registration and passcode.

I am not sure if it is connecting, but I just made up my own password to see what would happen:

Feb 20 08:36:07 raspberrypi weewx[8705]: restx: CWOP: Exception <class 'socket.timeout'> (timed out) when looking for response to packet packet
Feb 20 08:36:07 raspberrypi weewx[8705]: restx: CWOP: Published record 2019-02-20 08:35:00 PST (1550680500)

But it looks like you are just using the CWOP servers instead of the Ham servers. Which is what I said for you to do and then just use -1 as the password. CWOP users (non-ham) do not need passwords. So the servers you are using don't require a password or rather most people just use -1 as that is what was documented to be used.

In your APRS packets in bold I've highlighted what servers you are using. You should use not just CWOP-3 but instead configure to use cwop.aprs.net as that will make sure you always reach a server that is up not just 3. You may have done this already. Well see when more packets show up. For now you are just hitting server #3.

Okay good syslog showing cwop.aprs.net being used.

Also now seeing other CWOP servers randomly being targeted. #3, #4, #5, and back to #3. All good.

I sent an email to the CWOP folks last week.  I am not sure if that was premature.  How long does it take to show up on the Gladstone site once I show up on findu?

Typically less than a week. MADIS ingestion is updated once a week, so it depends on when you catch the wave. Tuesday or Wednesday rings a bell. But lately because of the backlog from the government shutdown they are doing the best they can. I don't know if they are caught up or not.

Yeah, I am looking forward to seeing how good my data is.  The barometer should be dead on.  I also used Google Earth to get my station elevation.  I noticed that Google Earth elevation is within one foot of a modern GPS elevation control benchmark, so I should be good to go on elevation.

Thanks for all your help.

Where did your email go that went to the CWOP folks?  I thought you had two bounces out of two possibilities.

I will not knock myself out trying to contact Russ if you have an email already sent that seems to have landed.

From the CWOP page:

"1. Amateur Radio Operators

If you are an amateur radio operator sending APRS weather data to findU, you can join APRSWXNET/CWOP with an e-mail to CWOP-support@noaa.gov with your callsign, nearby town, zip code, and elevation in meters (not feet). Amateur radio operators don't need a CW/DW/EW/FW number."

Thanks,

You shouldn't need to wait too long to get a pretty good initial check on your barometer (at one point -- not much, but a start) by judiciously using ASOS stations and looking for local weather when the barometer is steady and nearly the same over a radius say of 40 miles (small pressure gradient).
