Hail in Tropical Hawaii, Across the Street from the Beach!
« on: March 08, 2012, 11:35:32 AM »
Yesterday it hailed here in Hawaii at my house on Oahu, across the street from the beach.  The hail was nickel to quarter sized.  I posted a video of it on YouTube.  Enjoy!

Pretty cool.  8-)  Some of the hail even appears to be larger than quarter size.

It looks like the dogs were in a hurry to get back inside!
OTH, the dragon didn't seem to mind at all.

Yes, the dogs were freaking out.  Also, the dragon is actually plastic, lizards that sized are not allowed in Hawaii!  It was a very rare event for hail that sized and in Hawaii - there is hardly ever thunder storms and lightning here, let alone hail.  And it's still raining today here.

...was Obama visiting Hawaii? Then it'd be called "...hail to the Chief..." (wink, wink)!

On the same day that the hail occurred, I also got video of the tremendous runoff from Makapu'u point.  There are not usually waterfalls here. At one point it even appears like it's flowing off the top of the mountain.  This just shows the incredible amount of water that we were being inundated with that day (March 6, 2012).

Hail in the tropics can occur from time to time in the spring when very cold air aloft from the mid latitudes makes its way into the tropics.
This has happened in the tropical south pacific as well.
It would melt fast I bet though!
