Moving software to external drive.
« on: June 10, 2009, 10:47:54 AM »
Hi all
I just upgraded from a lacrosse 2308 to a vantage pro2.  I never should have wasted money on the lacrosse.  The vantage pro2 is by far a better station.

My problem is I have a old compaq computer with a very small hard drive in it dedicated to my weather station.  I have been running VWS for 2 and 1/2 years now and I don't want to loose my data.  I changed the station in VWS and it is running fine.  However when I upgrade my station I also installed weatherlink, virtual vp, vp live and startwatch.  They are all working good except I can't get weatherlink to start up min. and in the bulletin mode,  I hope to work that out.  This morning when I checked my weather computer I had a low disk space warning.  I don't want to buy a new computer as this one works ok for my station.  Can I use an external usb hard drive and will all of the above software run on an external drive?  Can I install VWS on the external drive and can I move tha data from my c drive to the external drive?  I don't mind reinstalling weatherlink as I only have a few days of date in it.

Please let me know  if this is possible.
Thanks

http://www.davisnet.com/product_documents/weather/app_notes/apnote_34.pdf  for Weatherlink SW.  As for starting in bulletin mode, there was a hack for that but it had mixed results and I'm not sure it'll work in the latest version.   Just use a window/macro  pkg. like Autohotkey.

Wait... you are using Startwatch, right?  It will minimize WL and put it into bulletin mode.  Free from softwx.com

I am using startwatch in the trial mode.  Can this be why it is not starting weatherlink right?

No, even in unregistered mode it will work.  HOWEVER, in trial mode it wil ONLY  manage one app.  The others can be listed but are not  managed.

I'm using an external hard drive for VWS and WeatherLink on an old PC and it works but does run slower over all because of it.  I did keep StartWatch and VirtualVP on the main drive though.  Your best bet would still be to just put in a larger hard drive in the old machine.

On your WeatherLink trying to get it to minimize..

I found on my system a quirk that until now you may be the only other one I know of that has run across it.  With WeatherLink open reduce it so the size of it's window only fills part of the screen.  Then close the program and trying again with StartWatch to open it.  If it's like mine it will minimize from then on until for some reason in the future you have a full window open when WeatherLink closes.
