No Visitors Allowed!
« on: August 23, 2018, 03:23:50 PM »
Well I got a visitor today. I had to tell him that no visitors were allowed! Here I thought I might need bird spikes (haven't seen a bird yet) and instead I get this fellow showing up. That does it ....I'm going to have to grease the pole.

NO !!!

I would welcome it to stay close.

When I had a blue-tailed skink living in the rock pile at the bottom of the 4X4 that holds my station, I never had a spider problem. After the black snake cleared the yard of skinks, I now have to clean the spiders out of & off of the station every week.

Ohhhhh, I didn't know. So they eat spiders?....Okay he can stay as long as he doesn't do his business in the rain gauge.

They are freakin' everywhere around here. My wife says they are anoles. They have this cool looking red pouch that sticks out from under their chin. And then they like to bounce up and down as if humping or twerkin'. Pretty hilarious to see. Its like they have headphones on and they are listening to their own tune.

Well maybe I should have spoke to him in a British accent so that he could understand me better.  When I asked him to leave....well it was more like, "Bloody hell! Get off my pole!"

Carolina anoles, they're everywhere around here.
Like bats they're voracious insect eaters, they'll help keep mosquito, gnat and fly populations down. Unlikely to dump in the rainbucket.
Lots of birds and snakes, bigger lizards, etc., prey on them.

Carolina anoles change colors, they're usually a bright green. They vocalize a lot at night (making a soft 'eeep...eeep' sound).
The wetter the general area climate is, the more of them around. They now range, in TX, from the Hill Country, where they're cold-limited so far, east to LA, to the Valley (where they're very numerous) and Mexico.

My wife says that what we have here now is not the Carolina alnole. What we have is the Brown anole with different patterns of stripes and spots. It does not change colors like the Carolina anole. The Brown anole is not native to Florida and is from the Caribbean. This invasive species introduced by humans has run the native Carolina anole out from better food sources on the ground, So Carolina anoles now live on tree tops.
