Anyone using SDRs to receive radiosonde data?
« on: March 11, 2018, 05:37:44 PM »
My friend the PG&E meteorologist, in conjunction with the USAF meteorologists from Vandenberg AFB have been traveling to local schools for a presentation and then launching a weather balloon carrying a radiosonde.

Which got me to thinking and then doing a little searching. Here's how to use an SDR to receive radiosonde data.

Has anyone here ever tried it?

The May-June QEX Magazine from the ARRL has an article by Ryan Gedminas, WW6RAG titled Weather Balloon Hunting.

In the article, there was a mention of a predictor program at http://predict.habhub.org

I plugged in the NWS Gaylord, MI coordinates and ran the predictor. The track would pass just south of me.

Hmm. This might be interesting. I know the original post was over a year ago, but the QEX article may have piqued my interest.

The SkySonde program mentioned in your link is interesting as well. It decodes the data, so you don't have to puzzle over some cryptic packets.
