FireFox Fonts?
« on: December 23, 2008, 05:53:23 PM »

Hi friends.

i know many of you prefer using FireFox over other browsers. I just downloaded and installed it. However, the fonts appear less crisp than in IE. They appear slightly fainter and almost "dot matrix"-like. Is that normal? Is there a setting I can change to get crisper fonts?

Thanks!

I have noticed that as well.. I also have not found much of a remedy to the situation. I have changed font types and made a little difference but
not enough to be concerned about. I usually have mine set to let the website use a different font than what I have set as default.
IE does have the better appearance it seems but it's usually a trade off for security versus appearance.

I did check Control Panel, but I don't understand the path. Can you be more specific?

Thanks!

Kevin...

EDIT:  Just for clarification, it doesn't seem Windows-related as the fonts in IE look crisp, clear, and well defined. It's the fonts in FF that seem pixelated. The graphics are also fine in FF.

Sorry about jumping into the middle of this discussion - but since I use Firefox/Mozilla almost exclusively I wondered if I was missing out on something  ;) - so I did a bit of searching.  What I found said this:

You can turn on font smoothing for Firefox, but there is a catch—you have to turn it on for all of Windows at the same time. To turn it on, go to the “Display Properties” dialog box (either through the control panel or by right-clicking on a blank area of the desktop and choosing “Properties”), click the “Appearance” tab, then click the “Effects” button. Under “Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts” choose “ClearType.” This will add the same font smoothing effect in Internet Explorer 7 to everything in Windows, including Firefox.

Perhaps in the future Firefox will add a setting to use ClearType that overrides the global Windows setting (this is what Internet Explorer 7 does now). Until then it’s all or nothing.

I am not sure if that will help in your case but figured I should share it just in case.

Wow! That did it! Thanks, Ed. I don't think I would have found that. I'm surprised it wasn't easier to find that fix on FF's troubleshooting or Q&A sections.

There you go, Wayne. Give it a try.

Thanks all!
