Bunty, at one point in my early life, I wanted to be a geologist,.. actually, I think my dream was to be a combination archaeologist / geologist.. and however that translates to "Dinosaur Digging" and "Atlantis" and "Sumeria" into one "discipline... and there may be a name for that, but WC?
Anyway... I did some College on Kentucky, and Mid America... now, this was umpty-doodle years ago... what a surprise to find that KY has been "resurrected" 3 or 4 times on it's bed of limestone... unless that "science' has changed since the 60's... maybe.. Any way, there are two or three specific faults that have always very much interested me... one is, of course, New Madrid... and the other is the Mid America, and the other is Meers down there in the Sooner State..
http://boingboing.net/2010/10/14/earthquakes-in-oklah.html I never messed so much with the "San Andreas" Zipline, since I experienced some EQ's out there during a short stay in/around SF back in the 60's ... It's been a foregone conclusion of mine that California is going to fall into the Pacific, and there's no hope... forget it.. move outta there and write it off.
anyway,... glaciers melted, Ice age ended... Weight was removed... Limestone and the floating "Plates" have rebounded... also tons of "water" have been removed from aquifers"... stuff floats. It shakes when it floats.. Fracking puts more "stuff" into the lower regions, right? So, something floated.. now something 'unfloated' a bit... betcha this... betcha if 'fracking and stuff were stopped you'd see more intense earthquakes... betcha. Even though it's hard for me to believe a 1-3' hole in miles deep sediments can be that impressive... however, ...
basically you've got this humongous plate that built Sierras, Rockies, etc sliding under us... maybe it's the 'birth pangs' of the "Sooner Mountains" that is occurring... or perhaps the rebirth of the great "inland sea"...
this is expressed without 'credentials'... so take it however you wish... just brainstorming...
