Weather Underground troubleshooting & WL 5.8.0
« on: January 21, 2008, 07:51:41 AM »
I’m a new VP2 owner and have installed the new 5.8.0 WL software version (though I’m only using a USB connection from the console to the computer).

As far as I can tell, I’ve followed the instructions to the T (been a software engineer for over 27 years).  I’ve got the WuiWlink_1.dll module installed in C:\Program Files\WeatherLink\Expansion_Modules (new location versus the instructions since 5.8.0 now puts the WeatherLink directory within Program Files) and WL recognizes and runs it from the File menu.

I’ve entered my brandy-new station ID in all uppercase (KCOCOLOR92) and my normal Weather Underground logon password in correct case as well.

Then I click “Test” and no joy.  “Incorrect station ID or password”

I’ve tried all sorts of permutations and combinations to no avail.

Any ideas anyone?  Maybe a 5.8.0/WuiWlink problem?  Or perhaps a PEBKAC error despite my best efforts?

Just curious where you clicked test. I didn't see that any where.
Make sure you have the Wunderground Module enabled. You can install it in Weatherlink but you still have to enable it.It's disabled by default.
Also make sure internet transfer is turned on.

Just curious where you clicked test.
In WeatherLink: File->Wunderground settings...

A dialogue box pops up entitled "Wunderground Preferences".  In this box you specify the Station ID, Password and Update Interval (and "Offset Minutes" which I have no idea what that is, but comes up with a default of zero so I'm leaving it alone).  Immediately under "Offset Minutes" there are three buttons, "Ok", "Cancel" and "Test" (there's some "Upload Archived Observations" stuff below these buttons, but I'm not dealing with that yet).  So that's the "Test" button I'm clicking.

The "Test" button is referenced in the Wunderground installation documentation here under "TO SETUP THE MODULE", step 3.

So the module is installed and enabled (I found that if you disable it, the "Wunderground settings... in the File menu disappears).

Also make sure internet transfer is turned on.
Are you sure I need to do anything with that since I don't see any reference to it anywhere in the documentation for installing and running the Wundergound dll?

Internet transfer needs to be turned on to upload your data to Wunderground.
As for the Wunderground Preferences box, I never even knew it was there. Mine was still blank.
You need to go to the Data upload profile box.
Click on setup and then click on internet settings.
You will see 8 data upload profiles. You need to fill in the information in one of these profiles. Just click on configure and enter the info it asks for. There should be specific instructions on how to do this for Wunderground.  Pretty easy really. If you can't get it just ask.

Enabling internet transfer did the trick, though no need to setup any profiles...

Settings->Internet Settings

Turn "Internet Transfer Enabled" to "On", and then click "Internet Connection Settings".  In my case I set the Internet Connection to "Connect through a local server" and clicked "OK".  I got a couple "You haven't set any FTP settings" warning popups that I OKed (since I'm not uploading to a webpage... yet).  Now the test button resulted in a success.

Took forever to discover that I needed to Click File->Real Time Mode to enable rapid fire, however...

Thanks for the help!

Ps. It's not up 24x7 yet, but this is my PWS on weather underground...

I have had the same lost connection problem.

But  not to the extent of others.

What is the verdict on 5.8 so far?

Should I update or  If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

I am curious about this also.  Anyone have any good or bad experience with 5.8?

Bear in mind I did not upgrade to 5.8.0, it was an original/first install.

However, I had no problems whatsoever with WL 5.8.0 communicating reliably with WU with rapid fire updates for at least a week.  Since then I've moved on to VWS, but for other reasons.

WL 5.8.0 will communicate "natively" with the USB datalogger, rather than emulating a serial connection like previous versions (as I understand it).  However, this causes VWS problems (no serial port to connect to).  But you can force 5.8.0 to communicate via a serial emulation for VWS use which is what I've been doing now for about two weeks.

So far everything has been quite reliable (I'm using Vista).

I downloaded 5.8.0 and It wanted to set up a new weather station.  This was discussed at http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=1318.0

I'm running Wx MonitorII into a serial port and saw no benefit to 5.8.0, so I uninstalled it and kept the 5.7.1.

So 10 months later I've setup a new system (a thin client to run the weather station -- I'll publish a lot more about it once I get this working) and I'm dead in the water again in almost the exactly same place...

Brand new XP install, no anti-virus, only the windows firewall active (yes, a risk, but I want to keep the debug of this problem as simple as possible).  Only WL 5.8.0 installed and the SI lab drivers to map the USB port to a pseudo-serial connection.

The VP2 and WeatherLink are communicating just fine -- I can see the station's data in the WL app, and it updates in real time.  I can browse the internet just fine -- the network is up and running.

No other software whatsoever (well, Adobe reader so I could read some documentation).

In other words an absolutely clean system.

I have quadruple checked my weather underground station name and password.  When I start the real time updates it report success but nothing updates on the weather underground web page.

When I open the weather underground settings and click "test" it report success too -- but nothing updates on the web page.

For the record:

XP Pro, SP3
Intel D945GCLF motherboard
Seagate 160gb drive

That's it, not even a CD/DVD drive.

Does anyone have any insight as to what's happening, or should I say isn't happening?

Nope, that's the old Vista system that I'm running until I can figure out what's going on with the new system.  That's what's so frustrating -- I've had this all working on my Vista system for almost a year (you can see my bringup issues with that system earlier in this note) but with the new XP system I've been struggling with this problem off and on for about a week now -- everything runs just fine on the Vista system, and I can't get the XP system to do squat.

I worried about all the possible pitfalls of bringing up the new system, but figured getting the WL and VWS up and talking to WU would be a cake walk, but it's turned out the other way around.

Ps.  Yes, it sounds backwards, "old" Vista system and "new" XP system.  I can't begin to describe how utterly dissapointed I am with Vista, which is why I'm trying to move back to XP.

Long shot but in Windows firewall, do you have WeatherLink added in the exceptions list?

Just tried that, no joy.  Though I have gathered some additional data and I think this is a Weather Undergorund issue, not a Weather Link issue, so I have moved the problem with an addtional datapoint to a new topic here.
