Hi,
I have the possibility to ask my hoster to upgrade the PHP version (see choice in attachment).
I think this is ok, from what I read on the net it's faster.
Any comments from anyone for things to consider ?
Thanks.

With current versions of the scripts, works fine with 7.2
Use check-fetch-times.php?show=versions on your site to see if you have current versions (and get a helpful link to get updates if you don't)
-
Ok Ken,
thanks for the advice
-
Switch is made on PHP 7.2.1 now
-
Are there advantages to upgrading? I am currently running 5.4 and Hostgator states their latest stable version is 5.6. They do offer up to 7.1 but is it worth the risk of upgrading?
-
The main reason to update to a release is to have support for bug/vulnerability fixes with the PHP interpreter.
See http://php.net/supported-versions.php
PHP 5.4 stopped getting security support in July, 2015
PHP 5.6 went off of development support 19 Jan 2017 and security support will stop 31-Dec-2018.
So you should at least update to 5.6 (and strongly consider 7.2 which was released in Nov. 2017).
BTW.. the 'risk' is in NOT upgrading. Older PHP has unfixed vulnerabilities that may be remotely exploited.

I asked a question to the hoster to see if there were possibilities to speed things up.
I read a lot in https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=32717.0 (https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=32717.0)
And one of the suggestion of the hoster was also to upgrade PHP to 7.2 (which was without cost, just making a choice in my "contract")

My hoster offers through 5.6 and 7.0 and 7.1. I noticed that all of the checked options are present in the shorter 7.x listings.
mysql is missing in the newest versions, but mysqli is there. Is this a transparent change, or are there some risks of something getting broken?

if you can use 7.2.x then for performance it is faster.

I'm hoping to move from 7.1 to 7.2 soon myself.

Well, I went ahead and tried the upgrade from 5.3.
7.x broke the "Evoluted Directory Listing Script" that I use to list certain files, notably the CoCoRaHS paper log scans. I also have some other files on another site I manage.
I updated the Evoluted Directory Listing Script (https://www.evoluted.net/thinktank/web-development/php-directory-listing-script) and it works with 7.1 and 7.2. It does seem to give faster response than the old version for the entire site(s).
For some reason my hosting (Hosting24) allowed up to 7.1 on two of my sites, and 7.2 on our Ham club site. Not sure why this is.

Hosting24 changed the control panel to allow 7.2 for the two sites and I made the change.

Ken,
I tried upgrading from PHP 5.6 to PHP 7.1 (GoDaddy). When running the "3in1" script http://indiantrailweather.com/wx3in1.php the "description and notes" section in the "Overview" tab displays "blank". Any ideas as to what I should check?
Thank you.
Update: Reverted back to PHP 5.6 until I can find a solution.

not sure of the link you provided since it looks like a non standard Saratoga template.
you do however have some updating to do with default files:

I'll move my post to a different location as the issue is not with the Saratoga dashboard. All of the Saratoga "base" scripts have been updated. I'm running a "modified" Saratoga dashboard created by "Burnsville Weather Version 6.92". The dashboard info. all appear correct using PHP 7.1. All of the page scripts run fine except the "3in1" script" which needs some modification to be run by PHP 7.1
