Hot! Hot! Hot! Heatwave downunder
« on: January 26, 2009, 05:27:37 AM »
Where I live, Adelaide, South Australia, we are going for our first heatwave for 2009. All this week Monday to Sunday will be above 35 C and the next three days are expected to reach 40 C+.

In March 2008 we had 15 days straight of above 35 degrees each day. That was the longest heat wave ever in an Australian capital city.

When that happened I did not have a weather station set up so I did not keep a record of it.

Thanks but I think I will just keep my current 22 F (-5.6 C) and be happy with it.   ;)

maximum    40°C    40°C    40°C    40°C    29°C    26°C    25°C

minimum     64°F   73°F   73°F 70°F 70°F 61°F  57°F

and we are a southerly city.

About 350km north of Melbourne is a rural city called Swan Hill.  Just spent a week there during the holidays
For the same period as above

minimum    27°C    29°C    28°C    25°C    23°C    22°C    19°C

maximum    108°F 106°F 106°F 100°F 99°F 95°F 91°F
minimum     81°F   84°F  82°F   77°F 73°F 72°F 66°F

Take note of the minimums as well - Particularly Adelaide.

There'll be a lot of grumbling, tired, irritated people by Friday!

At nearly 10 PM Adelaide time it is still 34.4 C.

Hitbylightning is right that there will be some sleepless nights ahead.

Next week sometime I will try and post a graph showing the max temps for the week.

Note that I will be using data from my station, not official BoM data.

Years ago I was a free lance columnist writing about the country music and dance scene here in the midwest in several magazines (all now long gone). I got an email from a magazine editor asking for some articles which I sent hoping for more exposure. I told the editor they were sample articles and if he liked them then we could discuss it further. He published them anyway and began sending me issues of the magazine Country Goss from Tamworth (I think). It was January/February when I received the first issue with one of my articles in it. It was the summer issue....I thought oh crap I got a left over old copy of the mag.....until the duh factor hit.....your summer ...our winter...LOL.....it was the current issue with my article in it....I was published in Australia !!! cool !

Get out the sweaters...
Our hottest day in Toronto area last year was 34.7c

This is prime example of the geographic difference of "comfort levels"

Even locally and seasonally, It hit 7c here on Sunday and was sunny with no wind, people were walking around without jackets, in the fall that would be touques, gloves and ski jackets...

I just read this in the news.  YIKES!!!!

SYDNEY – As if torrents washing through homes and sweeping away furniture wasn't scary enough. Authorities in storm-battered northeastern Australia warned residents Wednesday to beware of crocodiles roaming the floodwaters covering large parts of Queensland.

One reptile, lost in the deluge, was reportedly hit by a car. Snakes looking for shelter, sometimes in people's homes, have also become a concern.

"We've had sightings of three large crocodiles. I'm not sure if it's the same crocodile moving around," Joyce Zahner, the acting mayor of Carpentaria, told The Australian newspaper.

The paper said several dogs in the area had gone missing and children have been warned not to play in floodwaters.

45!

Yikes! That's hot.  To those of us that don't pay much attention to those "C" numbers, that's 113F.
Yeah.  I had to convert it.

The only things I love about NJ:

Ah the tilt of the earth at work.

Minneapolis MN

night time temps of -24F

87 straight hours below zero.

Never did understand people voluntarily living in Minnesota.  They tend to be very fun people though, I guess you gotta be when you live in misery most of the year.

That's just insane.  I would find a body of water and stay in it up to my eyeballs like a hippo.

Finally, the reptiles.  Never did like 'em much.  MOST of those in NJ (if you even come across one to begin with other than frogs and such) are not the least bit threatening.  No poisons and sharp teeth for me man.

Saturday is heading up to 43C again in Melbourne, however there will be hot strong northerly winds with this - which has a lot of people worried due to the extreme fire danger this imposes.  On top of drought conditions, the recent heatwave has left everything tinder dry.  Very scary day coming up.
