Ultra inexpensive DFARS system guts...
« on: June 04, 2012, 10:42:26 AM »
I saw one of these at a church picnic yesterday. Google solar fan hat.

5-20 bucks or so. A solar cell or 2, and a perfectly matched small DC motor and fan. Buy one and gut it out for a cheapo DFARS. At that price, if it lasts only a year it's still a bargain.

Another option is a solar powered RV plumbing vent for $35 fro Camping World:

or one of those solar vents for a car.

I think I'd go for gutting the solar plumbing vent unit.

I'm stuck with my Vue until it dies, with no way to add a FARS, at least that I know of.

Can't you cut a hole in the bottom plate of the radiation shield  for small fan?

I suppose you could... but if the fan pulls then I would wonder if I'd get enough air flow?

I tried the solar hat setup a couple years ago and found I got spikes on my temperature charts from the motor brushes. I believe member Axelvold, Lars, built one from the top vent/cap type  http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=3670.msg30274#msg30274.

That's why I didn't want to blow the air on it, heat from the fan motor would change the readings.

I put the fan at the bottom on mine, drawing the air down.

you've probably already seen this though.  Built it in April of 2010 initially, and then modified it properly and photo-documented while I did so.
