WMR-968 - Barometer needs replaced?
« on: October 27, 2009, 03:40:45 PM »
It looks like I might have a little bit of a problem here with my barometer and I need a second opinion :)  I've been away for about eight months so my station has been under the care of family while I've been gone.  I noticed when I returned that the barometer doesn't seem to be giving an accurate reading.  I'm using the BTHR968 and it seems to be reading the temperature and humidity fine but the barometer (set in inHg typically) is at least one inch or more under the correct reading.  For reference I have another station (LaCrosse 2310) about 50 feet away that reads nearly spot-on with the closest airport (roughly 17 miles away).

Is it time to just toss this sensor and replace it with a new one?  One example is the current reading... BTHR shows 28.17 but the nearest airport (KICT) shows 29.72.  I've also calibrated both receivers to the sea level pressure reported from KICT (taken from http://adds.aviationweather.gov/tafs/).

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Kelly

Did you check the batteries in the unit?

Are you getting these readings off of the console, or off of the bthr968?

The reading is off the BTHR968... the consoles read the exact same value.

In regards to the batteries... good point... I'll check them and make sure they're still up to par.

There is your problem.  The BTHR968 shows the RAW barometer reading ONLY, not the Sea Level reading.

The WMR968 console can display the SEA Level Barometer or the RAW Barometer.  On your WMR968 console, touch the screen where the readout for the Baraometer once or twice, it should then allow you to flip between the RAW reading and the Sea-Level Reading.  If both of those numbers are the same then you need to enter the offset difference in your console.  This can be done by selecting the Sea-Level Reading on the display, hold on the Set "area" until the reading flashes, use the up and down arrow keys to adjust it.  Then press Set again when you have the correct reading.

I've already set the sea level reading to match what the airport shows for their sea-level reading and currently it shows correct on the console (29.65 -- airport: 29.66).  I guess I have a bit of a relapse how the system worked :)

This is one of the many things I didn't like about the 968 console... it defaults to the values one potentially wouldn't care about (raw baro instead of sea level, wind gust instead of avg, in/hr rain instead of daily total).  I guess you can't please everyone :)

Thanks and sorry for the confusion!
