Serial to USB Adapter Advice Needed
« on: November 15, 2009, 08:38:51 AM »
There have been discussions of serial to USB adapters that worked and some that don't work with the Davis system.  I need some recommendations of which one I should order.
I have a Davis VP2+ with WeatherLink data logger that was purchased in 2004 (don't know the software version).  I can download the latest software from Davis.
The computer that I'll use is a Compaq Presario CQ60 dual CPU t3400 @ 2.17GHz running 32 bit Vista Home Premium.
My old computer power supply has finally died.  I'll install a new power supply and try to revive it but I still want the laptop to connect to the wx station.
Thanks,
Al

The ones with a Prolific brand chipset work best it seems.  I know softwx.com sells one.

The Tripplite Keyspan USA-19HS works well with the Davis serial logger.  It uses a TI USB chipset and a Zywyn RS232 transceiver.

So does the Cablemax w/ FTDI built-in chip; no drivers required.

Prolific is that way to go from USB to Serial, I have not found Serial to USB adapter anywhere on line.
They work well with astro equipment as well.
Remember to turn OFF power management for the USB port.

For Laptops PCMCIA Cardbus is a better way to go.
