No one location will always be exactly the same all the time. Even within just a few miles. You post your observation at a certain hour : example at 7 a.m. the temp is ...etc. : I sum up the whole 24 hours with the Lowest and Highest Condition for a certain day : I don`t see why that is so odd knowing the full 24 hour extremes opposed to just an hour observation. : This is a Weather Conditions Discussion Thread and I`m giving it to you on a 24 hour extreme basis. Along with that days records. I actually saw this Forum Name on Weather Bug Backyard Community Blogs : I also post the same info there and have never had any questions as to why I do that there.

Don't take my question the wrong way.. I was just surprised to see it here since I do not see anyone else doing it. I also compile daily, monthly and yearly records of all highs/lows precip etc. for Bruceton. Although I do not send it direct to Memphis NWS it is easily accessible via my website.

I have been keeping records in my area for only 2 years, since that is when I moved to this area. I am previously from Pennsylvania. There is another station relatively close to my station that reports but not real accurately I must add.

I am truly aware of the difference in all aspects of weather even a few miles away. I have also been a weather buff for many many years. Maybe you can advise how one becomes an "Official CO-OP" observer for Memphis. I have called them, and MADIS reports my information to them as well as CoCoRaHS yet I see no mention of my station or reference by the Memphis NWS office. It does appear my data is being used but cannot confirm that. You have any suggestions?

Not very many people will do what I do and the way I do it. Especially Voluntary . I`m Disabled so I have extra time to do it. And I love knowing all of the past 24 hours current conditions from 12 a.m. to 12 a.m. and it does take a little time looking up all of that info. What helps me is I make my obs. at midnight everynight. : I`ve got 20 years of personal records , since 1994 , the rest is the airports, which dates back to August 1, 1948 : The N.W.S. considers me backup for the airport. Since I do mine at midnight : I am their Only Midnight Observer by the way : There are 4 stations here in Madison County : Mine which is Bemis Jackson 4 SE , Jackson 4 NE , Jackson Experiment Station and of course the Airport !  Generally the N.W.S. only wants 2 or 3 stations for each county. On the other hand CoCoRahs allows anybody even your next door neighbor to report in if they want to. The N.W.S. will not give your name on the internet just your station Name , neither will CoCoRahs , I think they should but they told me that there is not enough space on the internet to give credit to each observer. That is why I also have Blogs on Wordpress, Google and use Facebook and Twitter. You live close to Huntington I believe : There is a Airport between Huntington and McKenzie that reports to the N.W.S. for both Huntington and McKenzie. It takes close to a year to become a Coop Observer because they have to get permission from their main office in Texas and the reason why they want to set up a station where ever they are wanting too. When I finally got my station set up it was really cool seeing my stations readings on their site though. Yours may be in the process of getting permission I`m not sure but good luck with it.

Here is information about CO-OP (it says Morristown, but I'm sure Memphis is similar):

Morristown is covered under Knoxville, Tn`s N.W.S. Not Memphis,Tn. but yes the rules are probably the same. However each office may vary a little on how many  and how quickly they set up their Coop Stations. and I would not know what the status of your station is but it sounds like you would be a reliable person or station though.

I just talked with a meteorologist at the Memphis, Tn. office and he said you would have to email the person over the Coop Program there in Knoxville and let him or her know what you are wanting to do and they would get back with you as soon as they could and let you know if it is financially ok to set you up as a coop station. And you would have to use the N.W.S. equipment that they supply : The N.W.S. does not use other equipment from other weather sources such as Weather Bug or Weather Underground. I hope this helps.

Thank you.  :)

I have thought about inquiring about Co-op, but with my job and swing shift hours, I wouldn't be completely reliable until I retire.  But I may do that in a few years.  ::fingers crossed::

I am truly aware of the difference in all aspects of weather even a few miles away. I have also been a weather buff for many many years. Maybe you can advise how one becomes an "Official CO-OP" observer for Memphis. I have called them, and MADIS reports my information to them as well as CoCoRaHS yet I see no mention of my station or reference by the Memphis NWS office. It does appear my data is being used but cannot confirm that. You have any suggestions?

Here is information about CO-OP (it says Morristown, but I'm sure Memphis is similar):

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mrx/?n=coop
I`ve heard of Ten Mile, Tn. are you close to Waverly, Tn. ?
Morristown is covered under Knoxville, Tn`s N.W.S. Not Memphis,Tn. but yes the rules are probably the same. However each office may vary a little on how many  and how quickly they set up their Coop Stations. and I would not know what the status of your station is but it sounds like you would be a reliable person or station though.

Ten Mile, TN is between Chattanooga and Knoxville, on Watts Bar Lake in Meigs County.

Thank you.  :)

I have thought about inquiring about Co-op, but with my job and swing shift hours, I wouldn't be completely reliable until I retire.  But I may do that in a few years.  ::fingers crossed::
Well good luck with your plans : By the way the N.W.S. does have coop stations that report rainfall only : That would still require 0.00 reports though. Maybe someday you too will be able to report to the N.W.S. as a Coop Observer like me : I`ve been doing it for the N.W.S. for 9 years now. The job I had when I first started got me home at midnight so I got me something to eat first and then got busy reporting to them and posting all of my Blogs where ever I could. And it is exciting when you get positive feed back.  I`m disabled now since 2008 due to health problems { Heart and Diabetes } so I have more time now to report in.

Thanks!  :)  I do like it here.  Although we're in the foothills more or less.  My dad was born in Townsend, TN and my grandfather was born and raised in Cades Cove (now in the Smoky Mt. National Park).  Now that's in the mountains!  =D>
